What is the exact weight of Orbe SE with motor and power in its OEM retail packaging?

Hi

I am transporting an Orbe SE by airplane. I am intending to use a PELI 1630 case that is 19 kgs. It is the only credible solution I can find to provide adequate protection and fit the OEM box.

This gives me scarcely any weight headroom, so I am thinking I will need to remove one or both of the power supply and motor, and carry them in my hand luggage.

I really would be very grateful for accurate weight information on: the whole set-up boxed in OEM retail packaging, the weight of the PSU and the weight of the motor.

Thank you for your help

Hi. I should have clarified that I am not currently in the same country as the turntable. I’m in the US. It’s in the UK.

I did see the 13.5kg specification, but I could not establish definitively whether that included the motor or not.

If it doesn’t, then I almost certainly have a show stopping problem. I’d be looking at carrying the platter in hand luggage, at which point you start to wonder what’s left in the PELI box.

I spoke to Steve at Michell Engineering yesterday. A splendidly helpful fellow who weighed individual components for me. He reports:

- the listed freight weight for a fully packed Orbe SE is 19 kg

- the PSU is 2.4 kg

- the motor is 2.6 kg

- the platter is 6 kg

recorded here only should someone else be attempting to fly an Orbe somewhere as luggage.

The only hard flight case I could find that would fit the OEM Orbe SE box inside was a PELI 1630 with foam. That weights 18.8kg.

The maximum weight for checked luggage across all airlines is 32 kg.

The only way I can be certain to be under check in weight is to separate the platter and carry it in my cabin case. Everything else goes in the PELI case. My tonearm and cartridge will be in my hand bag.

were I to do this again, I would allow more time to find an alternative to the PELI case well in advance. The 1630 cost me GBP 700 give or take, because I needed it sent overnight to the supplier. They can be found on eBay for less, and I can’t help but think there must be alternatives that I did not find.

If this was a new unit complete in its OEM factory packaging, then I would have taken some filament tape to reinforce the box, created a carry handle also using filament tape, and then handed it over to the airlines as checked baggage. The hard case was not necessary in my opinion because the factory has had to create packaging that would tolerate typical shipping trauma.
