DAC experiences?

Hi guys,

thanks for all your great advice so far. I come to you with DAC questions. I’m interested to hear your opinions on the Chord Qutest vs PS Audio DirectStream Mk2 vs Chord Dave.

I know they all sit at different price points, but I have a few options at good used prices and I would love to hear insights and experiences on these DACS, their sound, and living with them day to day.

I’ll be using Nova III floorstanders, Luxman 509z integrated, and for now a Node Icon N530 as transport but with a view to upgrade streamer.

For what you're considering spending, I would throw Rockna into the ring.  You should be able to find a used Wavedream or a new Wavelight for similar to what you might spend on the Dave or Directstream DACs.

I've heard the Airlens and a PS Audio DAC, but I don't remember which one it was.  I thought it sounded very good, but the friend who had it has moved on to something else.  No experience with the Chord gear.

I have the Wavedream Signature DAC and Wavedream Net server and couldn't be happier.  The Rockna sound is very clean and dynamic.  You can use the Wavedream DAC as a preamp, but I've never tried that. It does not have a headphone amp, if that's important.

The issue I have/had with both the DS mk1/mkii dacs is the softness/tubey bass, everything else sounds very good. Debated on the upgrades but was/still unsure if the bass would be fixed. I still have the DS mki on my desk thinking of putting it in my 2nd system.

The evolution from the DirectStream MK1 to the Limited Edition Signature Series PLUS marks a significant stride in audio refinement, particularly addressing one of the most common audio challenges: the tubby bass. This upgrade not only resolves that issue but also elevates the listening experience by delivering a remarkably realistic soundstage.

One of the standout improvements in the Signature Series PLUS is its handling of bass frequencies. The original MK1, while proficient, could occasionally produce bass that felt overly rounded or "tubby," which can muddy the clarity and impact of lower frequencies. The Signature Series PLUS refinement expertly tightens this bass response, providing a more controlled and articulate low-end presence. This means bass notes now resonate with greater precision and depth, enhancing both rhythm and musicality without overwhelming other frequencies.

Alongside this bass improvement, the upgrade excels in creating an immersive and lifelike soundstage. Listeners experience a three-dimensional audio landscape where instruments and vocals are clearly positioned, allowing for a natural and engaging spatial representation of music. This heightened realism draws the listener deeper into the performance, capturing nuances that might previously have been lost or blurred.

In summary, the upgrade from the DirectStream MK1 to the Limited Edition Signature Series PLUS achieves a sophisticated balance: it remedies the bass muddiness while simultaneously enriching the overall sonic environment. For audiophiles seeking both precision and emotional connection in their sound reproduction, this enhancement stands out as a defining advancement in high-fidelity digital-to-analog conversion.
