Sound becomes less open/smeared (less detailed)

Hi all.

Strange phenomena but when I play music (and leave my set on for days) the sound becomes less detailed (smeared). I know it's the pre amp (Bryston BP25).

After switching it off and then switching it on (after waiting a couple of minutes) the sound is more open and detailed.

It's strange because I also have the general experience when listening to stuff which has been turned on not long ago, sound is a little harsh and grainy at first. With use it gets more fluid and smooth. But my experience with this preamp is many times the opposite (but just after many hours).

Can someone explain this behaviour?

If I were you , I’d contact Bryston. Then I would ship the pre and have it brought back up to spec. I recently sent a pair of mono bloc amps to a different manufacturer because ONE had an issue. At 55 lbs each, I was hesitant to ship the second as I perceived that it was FINE. The one with the issue had a bad resistor . But once on the test bench , they were BOTH diagnosed with weak diodes in their rectifier circuits. My point is your pre needs to go on the diagnostics bench. I would recommend using Pirate Ship too. Best of results, Mike B.

After a couple of decades of on/off cycling, cold/hot cycling, electronics age and can fail, especially old capacitors. Soldered joints can deteriorate too.

Sounds like you have a great excuse to upgrade to a BP-19 that is a far better preamp with its fully balanced signal path :)

@easystreamer : yeah newer generation is truly balanced.

But I like to try to keep using the BP25.

Therefore I am asking for experiences and clues about the deteriorating sound.

I suspect the aging electrolytics but it also may have to do with stability of the circuit (voltage stabilization and overheating)?

Yes, this sounds like a thermal issue, possibly a leaky cap.

💯 it should be serviced
