Speaker Help Please: Floorstanders around $1Ok to fill very large space with no sub
Hi Gang, haven’t posted in here in years...
A great friend of mine is going through major remodel and looking for 2 large floor standing speakers to fill a great room 38’ long x 20’ wide with a celling that slopes in one direction from 15’-8’. so about 7200 cubic feet.
He is very serious about music. Used to book bands. He listens to a lot of New Orleans groove-based music and Americana. His wife loves female singers, like Brandi Carlisle.
My main advise to him is, since he/his wife don’t want a sub, they will need speakers with sufficient low end.
Haven’t thought too much about amp yet.
He will also use the system for 2 channel home theater watching.

The pro cinema speaker choice mentioned by @erik_squires could be a great choice. Also the JBL 4367's as mentioned by @audiokinesis. I would add a pair of used JBL K2 S9800(SE), refurbished JBL 4435 or 4345, Stage Accompany M59 and not least (if you're lucky to find them) used Meyer Sound X10's. If home cinema is an important factor consider adding subs eventually, like a pair of JBL 4641 or similar (with main speakers like the ones mentioned just above, I would avoid low eff. "hifi" subs). |
If you have the patience, wait for a pair of Sonus Faber Serafino G1 (first generation available from time to time at under $12k). Nothing will come close at that price point except for the G2 which will be north of 25k. These coul be one's "end all" speakers. Otherwise, for larger spaces, the Olympica IIIs will do the job, either the first generation ones or the Novas. They are both good. I auditioned the IIIs years ago and ended up buying the IIs as I had a smaller but decent sized room. The IIIs are really ideal for large listening spaces. This is coming from an owner of 8 pairs of SFs, now mostly Franco Serblin era bookshelves, plus an assortment of DIYs using the SFs to "voice" post design and measurements. When I have a larger space again, I will be hunting for the Serafino G2s (mind you not Sonettos as someone else recommended which are fine but..... not quite in the same class). Good luck!! |
I have had Wilson Sophia 1 for 8 years that do this quite well. I recently got my first pair of Harbeth, some 40.1 and they also do this quite well. The Wilson are more detailed with great bass. The Harbeth are warmer/less detailed as expected with a bit stronger bass. They seem to punch a little more. |
Talk to Greg at Volti Audio. Amazingly dynamic, accurate horn speakers. They are extremely efficient (approx. 100 db). You will need power for a room that large and a speaker that won't wilt under the pressure. I have the Volti Razz and they may be my last pair of speakers. For the money, they play way above their weight. Good luck. |
