Tube Phono Stage Recommendations

Hey,

Lately I been getting the itch to try a tube phono stage.

So, I wanted to reach out to get some recommendations.

Budget would be $2K or lower.

I am aware of the following that usually get good reviews and recommendations:

- Hagerman Trumpet MC
- Decware ZP3 (Looks like a real hardcore tube phono stage)
- Tavish (although not sure if they are producing at the moment)
- Black Ice Audio
- Schiit STJARNA

These are some that I am not really considering:

- Pro-Ject
- EAT

Any others that can be recommended that maybe I am not aware of?

Thanks

I cannot comment on your list, except:

My friend has a Hagerman Cornet II MM Tube Phono, I highly recommend it. I have heard it here in my system and at his home in his system.

My Phono is MM Tubes in a Vintage Tube preamp, and I use a SUT as needed to boost weak LOMC enough to continue using my MM Tube phono.

I pay attention to the recommended Impedance for various cartridges, I just helped a friend straighten out the jumpers on his confusing phono stage, it made an 'oh boy, now you're talkin' difference.

Eastern Electric Minimax phono amplifier if you can find one. I don’t think tube phono pres are made much better than that. it’s noise free, my system never had noise. People with megabuck systems have noise, speakers hiss etc. Not this amp, given the tubes are strong. It has MM, MC low and MC high inputs. I’ve looked at upgrading, but I haven’t really found anything worth upgrading for.

I’ll respond re something you’re actually considering: the Black Ice Audio F159, I have one and it’s fantastic.  Initially I used it with a modest MM Grado gold, totally transformed the sound from my in unit phono preamp in an NAD preamp to WOW!  I couldn’t even believe it was the same cart. I’ve since moved up the ladder to Hana ML and now the Hana Umami Blue and this preamp just does its magic.  I got very lucky and found one used, best $1k ever spent. But if you can get one even at full retail I suspect you’ll be tickled pink.

I second Wings2hockey recommendation with a caveat.  I had a Hagerman, very nice stage but outperformed by the Zesto Spirit.
The Zesto is fantastic but you would either have to double your budget to get the MC/MM version or add a step up to the MM version. It is a beautiful piece of kit even if you don’t upgrade the JJ tubes. Very sweet and yet dynamic. Best of luck…FWIW, Tavish is always backordered but usually worth the wait.
