High end sound

So I'm gonna get to the point. My system sounds kind of flat and dull

It doesn't seem to have crisp tight sound it all. It should sound much better. I think than it does. I'm wondering if it's the old speaker cables and interconnects and I have a old vintage phono cartridge it just seems like it's kind of dead sounding...Vpi classic

Talisman s cartridge retipped. I don't have a lot of extra money. My wife just died last year. Can anybody give me a hand with this? Thank you much.

When did it last sound good?  Any changes since then or just time?  If just age, I'm not an expert on your components but age of your equipment/cables (other than pre-amp) could impact sound, for example, Bryston - capacitors, bias, etc may need a servicing. If you liked the system at some point, why not buy the same cables (new old stock or their current replacements) if you can find them - try this in sequence - replace the phono preamp to preamp, pre-amp to amp, speaker cables to see if it makes any step in the sequence improves the sound.  Good luck.

It’s not the cables. Great cables can enhance an existing system. 

 

Two places to look. the first is the Maggie’s placement. They are incredibly sensitive to exact placement. To the 1/4" in toe in. Maybe they got moved

 So:

• 3–4 feet from front wall
• Carefully toed
• Properly driven
• In a room large enough

Which brings us to the amp. Has it been serviced? I think it is 20 to 25 years old. It may need serve as @idrachman mentions.

Thanks a lot guys i think you may be right about the amplifier needing an update?I switched from one volt input to 2 volt.Input and it seemed like it helped a little bit, I'm gonna call bryston, thank you.

Generally speaking, it’s common for amp capacitors to eventually wear out and thus need replacement. At 20yrs plus it’s not surprising if your amp needs servicing.

Also, the sonic quality of SS amps has significantly improved over the years at various budget levels, and there’s a high rise in GanFet amps. So it’s may be better to change/upgrade than to refresh your amp.

+1 @hilde45 - make sure your room acoustics are sorted out
