What innovative, unconventional cartridge designs can you recommend?

Most cartridges have a stylus and cantilever where the transducer (magnet, iron or coil) sits on the far end of the cantilever.  What other designs are there?

I am mindful of two designs which put the business end right on top of the stylus.  The first is the moving coil (MC) Audio Technica AT-ART1000 which places two tiny coils, each 0.9-mm diameter, with eight turns of wire directly above the stylus.  Australian price is about AUD-7000 and there apparently is a newer model, slightly less exxe. the ART1000X.  This has square coils for a bit more output, and threaded mounting holes.

A downside is that stylus replacement involves a factory maintenance program and the Australian website page describing this service does not exist.

Another design is optical, exemplified by DS Audio's range.  While these still need a stylus to trace the groove, the signal is produced by reading the intensity of light produced by a Light Emitting Diode (LED) hitting two sensors.  Between the LED and the sensors are two 'shades' mounted above the stylus which change the amount of light as the stylus vibrates.  These cartridges need a special "photo-stage" to replace the conventional phono-stage which is an additional expense.

Australian prices including photo-stages range from AUD-2,150 for the DS-E1 to the DS Master 3 at approximately AUD-40,800, which is a bit outside my price range!  Where is the sweet spot?

What other way-out designs are there?

@audphile1 I’m sure you are really trying to state, "I did not need another prolix reply to read through". I hope you can also concede and correct yourself by stating,  "I accept my suggesting nobody else needs the same content to read, no matter how Prolix is an inaccuracy from my end".

As stated by myself, the non posting forum member and the Onlooker non member are always considered in my posts.

In this matter, I do expect at some point a private mail from a non posting member to assist them is someway.

@lewm Your being non investigative again outside of the Gon, there is a Big Wide World out there.

For yourself, I can accept not being familiar with the Term or usage for the FSE. It is well noted within certain groups in the US and the UK that a Third Party Service based in the US, especially one recommended on the Gon Analog Section. At one time not too far passed, the Third Party Service proprietor / head self taught technician. Whilst in discussion, was adamant there was no such thing as a FSE. This statement was made even after having worked on a Cartridge/ returned to Cartridge to the customer which had the FSE incorporated. The Cartridge was being discussed to be returned as it arrived post Third Party Service as an unacceptable rebuild condition, the Cart’s owner was expressing their concern the FSE may have been misaligned as a result of the Cartridges condition.

Brexit being the cause of losing access to the Third Party Service that rebuilt my Ortofon and those of other friends has been a difficult period for this group to wade through. There is a trusted service yet to be found for certain rebuild tasks, or a reliably safe route to use the lost service, which enables meeting their wants to trade with Customers. Ideally a individual to take possession of the item to be worked on, and take it to mainland Europe for posting to the wanted Services premises. Wanted Service returns worked on item to the address in the EU and the individual transports the item back into the UK personally. This as a method avoids the bulldozer management of packages backlogged and not being delivered due to Tariff Payments not being resolved.

The recent design created for the FSE using the method that enables it to extend beyond Ortofon Cartridge models will be for the best if undertaken by the lost service, as this Services lead technician was free-lance hired by Ortofon, as a design team member prior to and at the time the Windfeld model were produced.

FYI, The Individual acting as a personal courier is not avoidance of Tariff Payments, even though the method does enable this. The Method prevents fragile items being postponed from onward delivery due to the Postal Services being so delayed in their processing further contact with the Customer to receive items. They are guaranteed their £15 so do nit care much for efficiency, the pile of goods being bulldozed around, is a huge cash cow for them.

I am awaiting my recent Japan Import with Valves in the package of purchase. This Package is now in the Bulldozers management, since the New Year when the UK arrival has occurred. The contact to pay Tariff has only occurred and is postponed due to the Postal Service being dealt with knowing the homes Postcode, but the home address number does not show on their system. Nothing can be done in the short term, hopefully the package is Rack Stored at this stage on the processing.

As suggested best to be avoided as a means of treatment for a fragile item.

I daresay there are other three letter acronyms that might be suggested! Although, I am of the opinion that a longer abbreviation might be what is required here: LiCO₃.

@pindac

There's no reason you should have to pay a tariff on your own cartridge making a round trip out of country, as long as all appropriate paperwork was filled correctly. This is a common situation.

I hope I'm right, because it looks like I'm about to embark in the same situation myself :)

Apologies for ranging off-topic.

The much wanted Service pulled the Plug on dealing with the UK, things got very messy at Brexit.

Pre Brexit purchases were arriving at peoples doors with demands for near £100 fees to have the goods made available. Loads of purchases were left with the Postal Services. It is also from recollection, an occurrence that when the EU Vendor could be contacted, the same requests for monies was being sent. Carpet Baggers and unscrupulous services rode the confusion until their intentions were seen as futile. Hence mainland EU retracted from dealing with sending items to the UK that was typical to them prior to Brexit.

For the UK to export living animals, the Paper Trail to be produced for each export, was not achievable in a sensible time line. The activity was more than bordering on cruelty, as animals were contained in transport vehicles for substantially increased period than ever known.

Northern Irish Businesses that exported Elvers to mainland Europe in the Millions went Bankrupt very quickly, as each young Eel needed individual Paperwork and proven traceability.

Anybody who travelled regular in the EU, especially those with second homes, or long term deals done for accommodation, who could qualify through Hereditary for a non British Passport, acquired Passports for EU and non EU Countries, as traveling in mainland EU was to much freer than being British. This methodology spread like wildfire for multiples of UK residents wanting to got to the remaining  EU.

My own EU Properties are not visited for multiple years, which is a sad case to be attached to.
