I have really enjoyed my two dacs, which are the Merason Dac1 Mkii and the SoulNote D2. I think they both would qualify as boutique.

As with everything, I have found it’s all about synergy. The Merason Dac sounds sublime with the Gryphon 120 integrated (really special amp, btw) and the SoulNote D2 sounds spectacular with the Qualiton P200 tube amp and LTA level 2 preamp. It also sounds great (but less holographic) with AFG Audion mkiii mono blocks.

Merason is somewhat laid back, musical and cohesive. The SoulNote is more lively, energized and detailed. Highly recommend both, especially when matched with the right systems.

Curious jim, I don't have a registered CC or ph ok ne number on AGon.  Reach out at SHF if you are a member there.

The Lab 12 has a big full sound , not necessarily warm because it isn't muted or sof on top.  It's the one DAC I have owned that sounds closest to a good record.    Good low end great tone.

I had an opportunity to listen in store and home before committing but I knew pretty quickly it was the sound signature i was looking for.

Merason DACs are very good.  I auditioned the Frerot and dac 1 also.

By all accounts the Imersiv DAC is a game changer.  When recording engineers say it's revolutionary it is probably worth a listen.   Way out of my range.

I'm not asking for absolutes.. I was curating a list based on my personal preference

OP, I asked was why you said "I would NOT consider these brands boutique...[including] anything made in China."

There are Chinese companies which fit the label "boutique." Perhaps you're just against anything made in China, boutique or not? If that's your personal preference, that your prerogative. I'd put my Holo Audio DAC up against many other brands listed here.

The Directstream MK1, in its original stock configuration, has long been recognized as a good-sounding digital-to-analog converter (DAC). It delivers clear, detailed audio that satisfies many listeners. However, like many high-end audio devices, it reveals certain limitations and imperfections that prevent it from reaching its full sonic potential straight out of the box.

What sets the Directstream MK1 apart is its remarkable capacity for improvement through targeted modifications. Enthusiasts and experts who have undertaken careful upgrades and tweaks—ranging from power supply enhancements to refined internal components—have transformed this DAC into an extraordinary piece of audio equipment. These modifications address the subtle flaws in timing, noise floor, and transparency, thereby unlocking a level of musicality and precision that few other DACs in its class can match.

In fact, after such refinements, the Directstream MK1 is widely regarded as one of the best-sounding DACs available under the $15,000 price range. Its ability to reproduce music with exceptional clarity, naturalness, and dynamic expression has yet to be surpassed by competitors within this tier. This makes it a coveted choice for audiophiles who seek the ultimate audio experience without venturing into ultra-high-end price segments.

In summary, while the Directstream MK1 starts as a solid performer, its true brilliance emerges through thoughtful modifications. This journey from a very good DAC to an exceptional one illustrates how expertly executed upgrades can elevate audio equipment to new heights, offering an unrivaled listening experience for discerning music lovers.
