Odd missing vocals?

Bedroom system - Bluesound Node to a Rotel RB-1070 to KEF Q150s. Streaming from Qobuz Bee Gees Nights on Broadway. SQ is ok, not stellar, and something seems amiss. I realize I can’t hear Barry Gibb’s falsetto “echo vocals.” You know, on the refrain “blaming it all….blame it on the nights on broadway…”

I played three different tracks of the same song - same thing. Listened to it just on my iPhone, and it plays normally. Any ideas? The Node has always been fine with an old receiver as the amp. Could this older Rotel have a problem? It just seems so weird.

@yogiboy thanks for the suggestion! I’m out of town now for a few days but will try that right away. I also wondered if turning the max gain way down on the Node might have had something to do with it.  But your suggestion makes more sense…I think.

In my experience, it’s likely the amp.  I’d test with another one for improvements.

It may be a frequency range that is a null point in your room. Try listening up very close to the speaker and see if it's coming out but disappearing as you move away.

trouble with Midrange vocals missing on Bluesound Node

Missing or recessed midrange vocals on a Bluesound Node can often be resolved by adjusting settings within the BluOS app, particularly by disabling "
Audio Clock Trim," tweaking tone controls, or ensuring proper input/output settings. Users have noted that sometimes a "cold" or "flat" sound profile can be adjusted by reducing sub-bass or using external DACs for better vocal presence.
Here are specific troubleshooting steps based on user reports:
  • Toggle Audio Clock Trim: Go to Settings > Player > Audio > Audio Clock Trim in the BluOS app and try toggling this setting, as it can affect timing precision and, in some cases, the midrange presentation.
  • Adjust Tone Controls: Some users report that activating tone controls (Bass/Treble) can significantly change the sound character, sometimes flattening it; experiment with these to boost the midrange (or lower the bass to reduce masking).
  • Fix Output Level: If using an external DAC, set the Output Level to "Fixed" to ensure the Node isn’t altering the signal.
  • Power Cycle: Unplug the Bluesound Node from power for at least 30 seconds to force a cache clear, or perform a factory reset if issues persist.

Ok, just back home in Chicago from the NYC snowmageddon! I tried reversing the polarity on one speaker, then the other, but still had the odd missing vocals. On a whim, I reversed the left and right outputs. Viola! The music is full range and the missing vocals appeared! It doesn’t really make sense (does it?) but I’ll leave well enough alone.
Thanks for the suggestions, all.
