AMT Tweeters integration

Hello,

I'm looking for a pair of floorstanding speakers in the $2500-4500 range. Since they will be driven by a 70-wpc integrated tube amplifier, my options are limited to efficient loudspeakers (ideally above 88db); additionally, I lean towards a musical-warm sound (Sonus Faber, Dynaudio).

Aside from Revival Audio and Dyaudio, most of the speakers I'm considering have AMT tweeters (Dali, Whafedale, etc.).

So, wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to compare both configurations (3-way regular drivers vs 3-way regular drivers plus AMT tweeter).

My main concern is that, at this price range, the integration of the AMT tweeter with the other drivers might not be well executed, and that the overall sound presentation may be perceived as if there were two pairs of separate speakers, one pair doing the low and mid frequencies and a second pair doing the high frequency.

Please let me know your thoughts, much appreciated it,

Thanks,

Is it possible for an AMT speaker to sound like “two separate speakers”?

-> Yes, possible if the design (of crossover) is not well executed.

Is it inherently true of all AMT speakers at this price range?

-> Not at all. Why would you make such a hypothesis? Do you have any evidence to support that claim, or is it just from your own imagination? Take a listen—even much more affordable but well-received speakers like the Wharfedale Evo series, such as the 4.4 that was highly praised.  Take advantage of this deal and save yourself $1k for something else.

70 watt amps will need really efficient speakers. I’ve owned 100+ watt tube amps, latest was with kt120 tubes and I got rid of it because it couldn’t control the woofers, too flabby at decent listening levels.
I used to own a pair of amt’s in the late 70’s with the heil amt and for decades I thought that was the best tweeter/midrange driver you could buy. I’ve heard some really good speakers with the newer amt drivers and they sound very nice.
IMO, with your 70 watt amp, I would get a pair of the ps audio fr5’s or the fr10’s and get a pair of REL ts/9x subs so your tube amp doesn’t have to power the speaker woofers. BTW: ps audio makes damn good products
