Goldenear….recent experience and lesson learned

Against better judgment, I bought a pair of GE Triton 3+’s new from my dealer about a year and a half ago for my home theater. I went against my gut, and bought a pair of powered speakers. Of course, last week one of the amps died. The speakers are still under warranty.
Reached out to my dealer, who called GE. Apparently GE no longer has replacement amps. I can remove the amp and send it in for repair, but no replacements are available. Pretty sh-ty. Nice job Paradigm (probably old news, put Paradigm now owns GE). Never been a Paradigm fan…and this just confirms my feelings.

Should have followed my gut and bought non-powered speakers and a separate sub instead of GE, Chinese assembled junk. Lesson learned!

Just a heads up for all you GE owners if/when you have amp issues.

Prior to buying any GE speakers, call Paradigm to confirm they will have parts in the future to support your purchase.

Need some advice/help on my Triton 3's. My 12-year-old Triton 3s started making crackling noises out of both speakers.  No complaints as I've enjoyed them all these years.

When I pull out the AC power cords and run them without the subwoofers, so only the tweeter and midrange are in use, there is no noise. Called GE customer service, and they no longer have parts for the original 3. I can send in the amp and crossover for repair, but the cost, including shipping, will be approximately $600. and that assumes my not screwing up the removal and replacement. The repair option doesn't appear to make sense as the amps are 13 years old and could have another component part failure soon enough.

I see my options as running the Triton 3s without the built-in sub and getting an external sub (like the SVS 1000 Pro $600) or just buying new speakers. My speaker budget would allow for something like the Dali Oberon 7s or Wharfedale Linton 85s.

Has anyone run the Tritons without the built-in sub but with an external sub? Or am I better off just getting new speakers?

All thoughts/advice are greatly appreciated.

Roll it to the curb and put a "Take me, despo for a loving home" sign on it.

Get the wharfedale or something.

The last few pairs of Triton 3s shown as sold on HiFi Shark went for $700-1000....so, probably not worth getting them fixed for $800 thinking you can resell them unless you like them so much you want to keep them for another few years.

For $1400 you can buy a pair of SVS Micro 3000s and see if that does the trick...and if not, you can send them back.

@jnc Sorry to hear. They sound great when they work, very smooth, rich and unoffensive.

@hk_fan

I’ll still never buy a powered speaker.

That also applies to subwoofers. I've had bad experiences with both.
