Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

That is strange because Spotify has it - btw, Spotify is lossless HD now!

Wynton Marsalis won 3 Grammy awards for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Group with "Tain" on the drums

1985 - Black Codes From the Underground

1986 - J Mood

1987 - Marsalis Standard Time vol. 1

And Branford Marsalis won the same Grammy award in 1992 with the album "I heard You Twice The First Time" 

All four of the above albums are straight ahead old school jazz recordings.

In 2000, Branford Marsalis won a Grammy award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album by an Individual or Group with Contemporary Jazz.

Both of Branford's Grammy winners also feature "Tain" on the drums.

Love this thread. Would like to thank whomever it was that turned me on to Ben Webster's "Soulville" album.

I have seven of his albums and have listened to bits and pieces from albums he’s played on. In fact, I’m listening to “Bar Talk” now.

"Soulville" is one of Websters best. It was recorded in October, 1957.

In July, 1958, Webster recorded "The Soul of Ben Webster".

I rate "Soulville" slightly better overall then "The Soul of Ben Webster". That said the 1958 session features the 16 minute song "Charlotte's Piccolo" in which all of the band members really stretch out their impressive solo's.

"Bar Talk" is excellent. Tains cover of Bjork's 107 steps, which I posted above, is a phenomenal transcription of Bjork's recording into a highly accessible jazz tune.

More "Tain" on this outstanding Michael Brecker album. Brecker used 3 great drummers on different tracks. "Tain" - tracks 2, 5 and 7, Elvin Jones - tracks 1, 4 and 9, and Bill Stewart - tracks 3, 6 and 8.
