Are exotic speaker cabinet materials overrated?

Seems a lot of speaker companies are coming out with new non resonant cabinet materials all the time. Wilson especially seems to be inventing a new M X V material every year. Other top speaker companies seem to be staying with MDF even when their speakers match the above mentioned speaker company prices. Do these exotic materials really contribute to a better sound or do they add an unnatural quality to the sound.

It has been stated previously, that Materials being design and selected are also ideal in the commercial Speaker Production Industry, as a result of their being considerably less labour intensive to work with. Much less man hours to produce a saleable Cabinet has much attraction when costing the retail price.

In relation to wood materials, there are already references to Wood Board Types being used by some manufacturers, instead of composites. Such a Wood Board Material compared in cost to using regular board types, assembles as multi-board laminations to produce the Cabinet. Depending on the Qty of Laminations to produce the board, will share very similar costs per m2 to board material that will surpass the multi lamination in relation to damping / dissipation properties.

Less time building Cabinets, Less Materials to be worked with, Similar Costs, and Improvements on the critical intrinsic properties for damping / dissipation for the board materials being used, must be more attractive to both the commercial and DIY producers of a Speaker.

It is well known, Building a structure with exceptional structural properties is achievable with many board materials, as a single Material or Multi Layer Material selection.

What is lesser known, is that Building a structure with exceptional structural properties, which also has exceptional Damping / Dissipation Properties, is not to be found across a broad range of board type materials, this is very limited in the world of wood and range of materials that can be selected.

gdaddy1, this must be very complex physics and mathematics, I never said they didn't apply.

bartsw, compensation for the recordings' shortcomings is a difficult endeavour. I could add that microphones don't 'hear' everything there is to hear either, so what could we do about that ? Anyway, building great sounding speakers is a black art, in addition to science, not unlike building cartridges, I guess.

I view speakers as musical instruments, so of course cabinet material matters, exotic or not. Resonance must be controlled not eliminated, then you'll get a natural sound.
