Coda no.8 Vu metres question

Ok, so to those who have experience with coda amps, the VU meters have two settings, in first setting the meters are not moving very much and in the second they move quite a bit and at relatively moderate listening levels, with certain music can even flirt with the red. I can only assume the first less sensitive setting is watts? But the second....? Can anyone enlighten me before I start to bother the good folks at Coda?

I think the fact that they are as popular as they are, without advertising, says a lot.

I have managed to find out little more about the meters because frankly, after some thought I really wasn’t satisfied. So the upper portion is actually a decibel scale, in my case it’s -20 to +3db and the lower portion which goes from 1 to 100 is the power percentage meter. This actually makes quite a bit more sense. Also apparently some early models had different meters so that is likely contributing to confusion, in my case at least.

I had the same question a short time ago. Don't really pay attention to them anymore, kinda eye candy. Bought mine 2 years old and they were (the meters) just there. nice to look at though. Mine is paired with a Benchmark LA-4 pre amp in a large room with Wonderful Tekton Encore special edition speakers. Just rock and roll 85 to 90db give or take. The amp is wonderful, as others have described it. For my purposes (that being rock and roll) a great deal of headroom is needed to be accurate. For those that are unaware, My Tektons LIKE a great deal of current,( not watts, Current) and that current is GREAT via the Coda 8 V1 that I have. I have a PASS X 250.8 in another system and love it, again, Rock and Roll. It delivers approximately 60 amps of current if that is the correct way to phase it. The Coda, I was told delivers 75 amps. Again for my purposes of rock and roll, you can really tell. No regrets with my Coda 8, just accolades! Very impressive AMP!!!  Robert

Robert,

I’m using the same combo LA4 and Coda 8. I agree that the Coda is a great amp. It replaces a PSAudio BHK 250, and while 300w into 4 ohms vs 500 w, the Coda unquestionably out performs the BHK with difficult speakers. The BHK worked great for my previous Dynaudio Confidence 20s but was soft and loose for my new 30s when they drop to 2.8 ohms. I only have an hour or so of listening registered and will log more this weekend, so my thoughts are preliminary.

My question is have you listened to the Coda with another preamp?  Pass Labs in particular?  Interested in the contrast with the LA4.
