Please keep me out of the Rabbit Hole - Power Strips

I am finishing a new piece of furniture to contain all of my audio gear.  I need a total of 10 electrical outlets.  I can not spend much on the power strip at this time but I want to make sure that I do no harm.  I have heard that cheaping out on things like power conditioning, surge protection, etc... can result in treatments that can cause other issues.  When I renovated the house I did install a dedicated 20 amp circuit for this main outlet.  My gear is perfectly quiet.  Thoughts or Suggestions welcome.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone experienced benefits from upgrading the power cable on their Furman?  If so, with what cable and what benefits did it provide?

@audiostick Yes, I have witnessed the improvement more than once, but not on a Furman but a Puritan. I read that is the biggest power cable upgrade you can make, as it just doesn’t improve one component it improves them all, and they were right.

First when upgrading from the stock classic 20 amp power cable that comes stock with the Puritan PSM156 to the Ultimate power cord. And the same benefit in almost the same magnitude was witnessed again going from the Ultimate Puritan power cable to the Shunyata Sigma V2 (with the PSM156). This was with a dedicated line with 10ga romex. I am not going to use any adjectives or descriptors, you have to hear it yourself to understand. And no, I am not going to get anything more expensive than the Sigma- that is enough money spent on a power cord! (bought it pre-owned though)

Do some research and reading- search in Audiogon and read the reports from the hundreds of others who have experienced this years before I did.

But, and I don’t know how big of a but this is, if you are wondering if changing from the stock Furman $10 cord to a $100 cord on a $2000 hi fi is going to yield the same benefit as some of what you read, from me and others, you may be disappointed.

@danmar123 Thanks for your honest feedback.

@mclinnguy Was there any reason you did not go with one of Shunyata's "XC" power cords that are designed for power distribution?  Agree that an upgrade to a $100 power cord will do little more than improve aesthetics.

@audiostick Basically, my understanding is the XC ones designed to go with Shunyata’s power conditioners don’t have filtering in the cable, as the power conditioner does that. The cables are identical otherwise- same 6 gauge for Sigma NR and XC.

The NR cables have filtering to block the noise going backwards from the component it is connected to from contaminating all the other components in the system. That is why the NR ones are slightly more money than the XC ones. There is no disadvantage to go with a NR cable for the Shunyata power conditioner, just there is no point paying the extra money over the XC.

But, Shunyata states if one is not using their power conditioner it may be beneficial to use a NR cable for the filtering that the power conditioner it is connected to may not have.

My reason? I got a good deal on it.

OP, I second the Shunyata recommendation, with the caveat that if you're open to used suggestions, a used Shunyata MPC 12 would outperform the Venom one people are recommending I believe.  I got one for $650.  Retailed for $2000 I believe.  Shunyata is amazing to work with - they will even help you with used gear. I asked them in my case, whether or not going with the MPC 12 vs another older unit was better.  They said hands down the MPC 12C was better for my home theater application.  Before you buy anything shunyata, check what is available used and then send give them a call asking which unit will be better for your given situation.  Well worth that effort!!

@mclinnguy I do wonder if the NR is truly as good as XC for a power conditioner like you're saying.  The filtering is just an extra thing to mess up the current I would think if there's no noise you're trying to isolate.  I am no cable engineer, but this just seems like an extra piece of the chain so to speak.  I use XC on my power conditioners from Shunyata, and I use Cardas parsecs for all my other gear (amps, DAC etc) and they do well for me.  I haven't cared for Shunyata cabling or Nordost compared to Cardas in my system for pretty much everything, minus the cable from power conditioner to the wall.  In that case, the Theta XC I have was actually a wild upgrade.  Wild being contextually that I was able to hear a noticeable improvement that was repeatable when swapping back and forth as fast as possible (with help from a friend)

I ran the NR vs XC debate by an associate of mine who has a long history with Shunyata.  Furmans, like Panamax, Monster, etc, are considered as non-passive devices and have found to be unpredictable with NR of any sort - even as the NR is passive.  He has experienced greater success with XC from the wall to power conditioner.
