GoldenEar T66 is a solid high value sonic choice, the built in subwoofer means the competition may not reach as low without an added subwoofer.
New to this hobby please help me
Hi all i’m unsure on what speakers to get i have a marantz sr5011 my budget is 4,000 for floor standing speakers. I found a local deal on some golden ear technology t66 the red ones for$3800. Lots of information isn't there? So much so that it can get overwhelming. And when you are first starting, it can be difficult to even know what questions to ask or even what info to start with it. So, from what I have seen from you...we are looking at a mixed system for both music and movies. You have a fairly decent receiver to provide signal and power. You want a set of towers and have mentioned a $4k budget. Okay, the questions I have...
The answers can radically change what advice we can give. I mean "go to shops and listen to them" will be valid across the board but you don't want to go listen to $20k speakers when they are out of your budget. Some brands aren't even in regular stores which makes it even more difficult. It can also be tough suggesting things especially when you consider the used market. With new, there is a warranty or more/less consistent prices. With used, there can be great deals but you may have to wait for exactly what you want (at least in the price you want) and then you have some additional issues if something isn't working right or is damaged. So, in my case I have a home theater setup and while I do play music there, I have a stereo set up at my desk for more dedicated music listening. I have an Anthem Received for the home theater and I am using the onboard power. For that use, it has been perfectly fine but it is set up that I can add an amp for the towers or amps for pretty much all the channels if I want. I also use a powered SVS Sub on that system along with the towers, center, surrounds, and ATMOS speakers (it is 11.1 channels with Martin Logan speakers). On my music system, I used a pair of Arendal 1723 Towers powered by Outlaw mono amps with a DAC feeding the amps. I mostly stream from my Mac but I do have it set up use my turntable as well as other sources. These speakers go low enough that I do not feel the need for a Sub on this system. I also use power conditioners and upgraded power cables/speaker cables/rca's/etc. When it comes to it, the sky is the limit. But right now, I don't know enough to know what to suggest to you. $4k for an 11.1 channel setup is different than $4k for a pair of towers. And if it is just the towers, we need to know what else is in play because we don't want to suggest towers that don't harmonically match the center. |
@wizzard you have to use the @ and then the name of member to tag someone. Sometimes you have to try a few times for it to catch. To quote another member, click on the quotation marks which are located at the opposite end of the Bold and italicized options. My $.02. Get the GoldenEars and don't look back. They're that good. They also are very well made and I think the red looks amazing for the price. Your Marantz sr5011 is more than powerful enough as the T66 are fairly efficient speakers at 91 db. And all it would power is the mids/highs as the bass is handled by the internal amp and sub. The "technical" side of me could complain of their slightly elevated treble region shown in testing, but having heard them, it's not fatiguing. |
