Speaker Positioning

Should I consider floor standing speakers with a recommended (by manufacturer) minimum distance from side wall of 36 inches if my max only allows for 24? Just wondering how critical this type of guidance is...

The distance to the wall behind has to do with the death of your sound field and also with bass response. The father out from the back wall the more realistic and less flat the sound becomes.  If you can live with flat, put them farther back.  Not for me however.  Can you experiment with a system, ie sliders etc,  to temporarily move them out when listening?

Thanks, but my concern was the side wall. I have ample space to move them forward/back from the back wall.

Every room would benefit from treatments, then speaker positioning is next. Room boundaries are the problem, hats why they make absorber panel and diffusers.

this week from all I have read here, I have become stupider. You all have a good weekend.

Sometimes you have to make the speakers fit your room.  Complete open space around your speakers is great if your space allows.  Im sure many of us have made compromises.
