New to this hobby please help me

Hi all i’m unsure on what speakers to get i have a marantz sr5011 my budget is 4,000 for floor standing speakers.  I found a local deal on some golden ear technology t66 the red ones for$3800.  But how do i pick without the ability to listen to other brands kef sonus faber etc!!   Is golden ear even good what suggestions do you have on hearing lots of brands under one roof.  My listening is 50 percent music 50 percent movies.

wizzard

Just an alternative suggestion. I have a Golden Ear Super Array sound bar (4 feet long) that has the same ribbon tweeters as the T66 and some small mids.  Sounds great with a sub because the sound bar has no bass whatsoever.  The bar (great for movie placement) is only $1200 new on Crutchfield.  Could be a starer?

The audible difference between a $4000. pair of speakers and $40,000 pair of speakers can be surprisingly small. When we step up in resolution speakers get demanding of source meaning your marantz will be exposed. A $1200 pair  of speakers with a quality amp or integrated amp might sound better than a $4k pair of speakers with the wrong source, There's self powered gear, I think of the Kef LS60 second hand, Dynaudio makes some very good self powered units that on the used market are also within reach.

Mt point is system synergy between speakers and amp are as important as getting as much speaker as $4k can get. Have fun with it. If I could do it all over again I would have started out in the used market because I lost SO much money starting out trying to get my 'world class' speakers to sound like they did in the store demo.

If OP is in Los Angeles, Cal area, OP can listen my speakers (Wavetouch, vintage JBL, Focal, DIY Scanspeak, etc.). They all have very different sounds. Alex/Wavetouch audio

@wizzard It looks like Stereo Unlimited is in the San Diego area.  I would go into the store and just explain that you are new to this hobby.  If they are decent, they won't dismiss you because you are new.  My guess is that this won't be your last audio purchase.  It's more important to get to listen to multiple systems at various price points.  I stress "systems" because trying to piece meal something together is very difficult and will cost you more in the long run.  A YouTuber the "Audio Shrink" has been down the audio path for many years.  He seems like a decent guy and has recently offered a service to help people put systems together via the used market with his connections.  I don't know what the charge is for the service or the details, but it sounds interesting.  Good luck!

Hey, Wizard,

I've been through your journey with HT and now it's music, and I've combined the two pretty successfully (a no-no for many here, but by no means all).  I started with an out of the box Encore 5.1 satellite system and Denon receivers  back in the late 90's, and kept swapping out w/ used gear, eventually climbing to separates (used, like Acurus), to get a taste of real power.  The Encores moved out for Definitive Technology floor standers, up to the flagship 9080 towers (best damn home theater speakers I've ever heard in my room).

Well...that seems so long ago now. 2020 and Covid:  I clean out the garage to keep busy and find a well packed box of LPs. I bring those in the house and check them out and they're in pretty good shape, but I have zero turntable.  So, off to Amazon (mistake one-I should have done what you're doing: ask questions here). But  luckily,  its was a Rega P2, so not too bad of a start.  Switched out the standard cartridge (not bad, but not great) for my first Ortofon (the Red) and I was off to the races and haven't looked back.

I'm now 95% music and 5% television/film.  Though I need to update my profile you should check it out to see how I've integrated the two  systems.  I just got a used pair of Legacy Focus speakers that are the best sounding speakers I've ever heard, bar none (been to many many audio shows by now).  They are the front end. I kept the DefTech center and surrounds and two subs (the center will be changed out for a Legacy).

I live in Long Beach, Ca.  Not too far from you. You're welcomed to stop by and see how I've done it, but more importantly, you can here a good set of speakers (no, I'm not saying they are the best of everything, just well suited to my room, which is the point everyone wants you to get).  Private message if you'd like.  And to anyone else here who lives locally to Wizard, I suggest letting him check out your system.  Since we've lost most of the commercial listening rooms, we can be of help with ours.  Good luck, Wizard!
