New to this hobby please help me

Hi all i’m unsure on what speakers to get i have a marantz sr5011 my budget is 4,000 for floor standing speakers.  I found a local deal on some golden ear technology t66 the red ones for$3800.  But how do i pick without the ability to listen to other brands kef sonus faber etc!!   Is golden ear even good what suggestions do you have on hearing lots of brands under one roof.  My listening is 50 percent music 50 percent movies.

wizzard

I think the Golden Ear is a good choice for 50/50 music or movies. How it will mate with your current electronics, I don't know.

Without many speaker choices locally, you should start looking at audio influencers on YouTube who critique gear like the Audiophiliac (Steve Guttenberg), Jay’s iyagi, Ron at New Record Day, and others, as well as consult the archives of magazines like Stereophile and the Absolute Sound. First thing to do may be to Google the price of what you’re considering to fit your budget. Secondly, be sure you know where you want to place your speakers. Your type of music will also affect your purchase as the frequency respone, especially if you love loud, tight bass, may color your decision. Lastly, I’ve heard good things about the Golden Ear speakers you found locally and might add Vandersteen Model 2Ce Signature III which I believe is in your price range.

Erin’s Audio Corner on YouTube is an excellent resource.  Very thorough and meaningful reviews.  Strongly recommended.

My other 2 cents re-confirmed at recent Capital Audiofest hifi show is Goldenear is an excellent choice in general for both overall sound quality and value.

New is good, but used in great condition is great. I’d sniff the local for sale ads in any listing available, go listen to what you’ve researched and think you might like and pick something. You’ll probably get something reasonable for half of your budget. If they somehow grow tiring in a couple of months, do the research/buy again and sell the old ones for what you paid for them.

I’m in Virginia or I’d offer and audition three older sets I’m letting go soon. Polk SRS SDA-1.2TL, Canton CT-2000, and Martin-Logan Ascents.  All very different. Older, but ok for what I’m going to give them away for.

Good luck in your search!
