Back in the day (Early 1950's) when we first arrived in Central Missouri as Hungarian immigrants, my parents were able to get by because they had picked up enough German while staying at an Austrian refugee camp.

Back in those days, you could walk into most local shops and someone their spoke German as their first language. I was to young to pick up much but my older brother was trilingual back then.

Saw a variation on that in a camera store back in the 1960's, headed "Handsoffen Dumkoffen"...
