cartridge mounting

SO, my Reed 2G tonearm was mounted and set up originally professionally.  I have an extra headshell which I have mounted a new cartridge on...the headshells allow the cartridge some feedom of position, changine the effective distance for teh tomearm mount to the stylus, as welll as ZENITH....I understand the importance of zenith, but how about the effective lentgh?

FWIW, I have used and recommend the Feickert protractor and have done so for years.  It definitely is a good device and will get you in the ball park.  Several months ago, I bought AnalogMagik software, which measures distortion to help further refine turntable set up.  It is expensive, but it does take you further in terms of performance.  I have found the difference can be profound.  But I will admit that I am a nut.  Let's face it, in a day and age when the world is all streaming those of us who are worrying about getting the most we can out of our vinyl records are all just a wee bit eccentric.  So, if you want to reach for the next level in performance from your turntable, you need to take a look at options like Wally Tools or AnalogMagik.  In my opinion going with either option is more appealing and frankly makes more sense than going beyond a certain level in terms of equipment.  I base this opinion on a realistic assessment of the incremental performance difference between my SL1200GAE (~$4K) and my VPI HW40 (~$20K).  There is a difference, but it is slight.  By comparison, when I used AnalogMagik for the first time the difference on both tables was significant.  Moreover, the GAE sounded better than the HW40 before AnalogMagik was applied to the latter.

That’s good to kmow

Ive seen analog magic advertised

My thinking is once you play a record that’s thicker or thinner than another all

the setting become variable and things change again

I would like to try Analog Magic though
