Striking a balance between musicality and resolution

As my years and experience in this hobby continue to grow I notice a divergence between those seeking extreme resolution and detail from their music reproduction systems and those in search of maximum musicality.

In theory, high-end audio systems should provide more than garden variety stereo systems. In my view that means more detail and information should be heard from a high-end music reproduction system than one hears from ordinary HiFi stereo systems set ups. BUT is there such thing as too much resolution and detail in a stereo system’s sound presentation?

Some people feel that a less detailed presentation that is easier for your brain to process has better flow and provides more enjoyable listening.

So there is the dichotomy. Should one pay more to hear less? Can a frequency response performance that is curtailed at both frequency extremes be desired and praised?

Those that seek a “more musical” presentation usually point to their belief that that is how they hear live un-amplified acoustic music in the real world. In nature, high frequencies attenuate and decay with distance from the source and sound waves get absorbed, diffracted, reflected, and diffused by the environmental factors and landscapes; so they are not wrong in stating that in the real world the sound of music is less detailed and extended. The issue is that when we listen to our music reproduction systems at home we are not listening to live un-amplified music in a concert venue, but rather professionally produced audio recordings typically recorded with close-microphones techniques.

So the question is, do we want our systems to reproduce the sound on the commercial audio recordings accurately or does one want hear the sound the way one thinks that it should sound?

Lucky for me, I have enough systems at home that I have been able to design, set up, and tune them for different targeted resultant sound, sound presentation, and sound qualities. For instance, my OKTAN6 ultimate horn system is a dissecting microscope, my Pinnacle horn system aims at extreme musicality, and my WAAR reference system is a chameleon, which can be adjusted to sound exactly how you want it to sound in real-time.

My “test-bed” system takes on the sound character and sound qualities of the components in use and it is excellent for evaluating what new components have to offer or bring to the table in terms of sound qualities. But with the Acapella TW-1S ION plasma super-tweeters extending the high frequencies, the TBI Emperor subwoofers extending the low frequencies, and the highly detailed & nuanced Digital Audio Denmark AX24 DSD dac streaming HQPLAYER as the source, the “Test Bed” system is a highly resolving system.

As with everything else in life, is there a happy medium or compromise that gives you the best of those worlds? I believe that there is and that great music reproduction systems can be tuned to strike a balance between musicality and resolution. If one listens to the evolution of my OKTAN6 ultimate horn system for instance you can hear that the fine tuning is driving the sound in that direction.

So during last night’s listening session I adjusted the sound of my “Test Bed” system to a more musical sound presentation. The “Test Bed” system is always in flux so it allows me to experiment, explore, tweak, tune, and have fun with it.

I only find pictures of equipment. Pictures mean nothing to me even if it’s the most expensive audio system in the world. Only the sound matters to me. If possible, please post the link of your system sound.

This is important to me because I can only listen system more than 3 minutes is Carlos audio system (other than my system) in this whole world. If your system sounds close to excellent Carlos’ system, it’ll be a big plus to me.

Many of you can’t hear the true sound of Carlos and my videos’ sounds due to heavily biased your ears. Compare to the original music. Or if you wonder, ask your wife.  Alex/Wavetouch audio

Dear @carlos269  : We/you can't avoid trade-offas that always exist.

 

You already choose those trade-offs that make you happy and I choose mine too. You are happy and I'm happy too.. 

That's the MUSIC enjoyment.

@mahgister it appears to me that you have gone down a BAACH 3D Sound rabbit hole. Yes what you have stated is true but you have taken my statements to extremes, of course there is always direct and reflected sound and if the timing is less than 30 milliseconds then the reflected sound is perceived as part of the direct sound, but unless you are listening to your system in a shoebox then the brain’s sound arbitrator can distinguish and dismiss the reflection. For most of us the room acoustical parameters are what they are and we don’t use DSP to counter them. As a matter of fact, in my systems I take the room’s acoustic parameters as a given, along with everything else, and it is only then that I start to adjust the resultant sound at the listening chair position to match my target sound qualities. I simply don’t worry about many, if any, of the individual contributors that I can’t control and focus solely on adjusting the composite resultant sound at the listening chair position.

You got me curious now. Please post some audio recordings of your system so that we can hear what all that working knowledge on spatial audio and psychoacoustics has been able to do for you and the sound of your system. Let’s hear what you have been able to accomplish. Surely all this information has yielded something special. Please share some pictures of your system and room set up, along with some audio recordings. I’m looking forward to hearing what has been distilled from all the information you have presented here.

My ears are least biased and similar to non-audiophiles. My system is the only natural sound system (meaning reproducing the original sound). My ears are biased to the true original performance (not the original recording). All mics and recordings are un-natural. Alex/Wavetouch audio

 Our room acoustics content and parameters are there to be optimized  for our listening position...By the right ratio of absorption/reflective surface/ and diffusive devices or surface, by mechanical control devices as resonators and/or by DSP ...What we can do with DSP can  sometimes have a mechanical equivalent so to speak...

For me system/speakers/room/ears  are one integrated set of factors...

i am here because i am interested by music jazz and classical...By acoustics theory (not mere room acoustic).

My present system is low cost and modified in my small acoustic corner and satisfying for me (the pieces are in my virtual page )...Nothing to brag about here and to compare to others system...

My dedicated acoustic room is now in the past because i sold my house...

If i had photos and if you looked at it, you will think i am nuts...

One idiot mock me for a week few years ago and i did not even see all my room ...

I mostly used among others homemade devices 100 tuned resonators in bundles distributed from the speakers drivers around my listening position in a specific way ( a kind of mechanical large band room equalization which modified the pressure zones levels too).

The result were astounding. It takes me 2 years to tuned them to my satisfaction . I am retired i did it 7 days on 7... It is how i learned basic acoustic concretely with my ears... it was fun... I read a lot about applied  acoustics... Now i am interested by hearing theories...

Your  implicit argument is very interesting : if you dont post your system anything you say is disqualified ... smiley

The problem for me  was never bragging about gear but understanding how to optimize a system room...Now the interesting problem for me is : what is sound.  it is not  just  wave for human hearing, it is "meaning" associated with a vibrating sound source  physical invariant which the brain analyse in a non linear way by acting on it . It is why i am interested by psycho-acoustics... I am also interested by speech and linguistic a related field ...

 

By the way Choueiri is not "a rabbit hole". It is a serious acoustician whose articles and videos inspired me among others acousticians...

My dedicated past  system/room was homemade, with plumbers trash tubes collection  among other materials..smiley
