Modding the PS Audio Directstream DAC MK1 and MK2

I would like to continue discussing all the mods we have created for these two DAC's as it seems PS Audio is no longer allowing discussions about them on their forum.

For reference here is a link to the closed discussion.

The larger / taller heat-sinks actually touch the top of the metal lid.  We put a thermal pad between the heat-sink and the lid.  This  ends up using the complete top for additional heat dissipation. Works very well.

This one complete black unit is available now. More to come after the first of the year.

This is our best unit available. The Limited Edition Signature Series PLUS with all the new bridge II upgrades. If you also need a bridge II card you are in luck as we will include a Bridge II card for free on this one.  We only ask for an honest review in return.

For the ones who has a Directstream MK2 with our transformers installed. We have a firmware that makes a large improvement in the sound quality.  Much more detail and a more realistic sound stage.

Download and unzip it to a USB thumb drive. The file name will be fpga_228_APSaudio.bin  Note: you can unzip this file in your current USB thumb drive that contains the Mount Blue Sky fpga firmware if you want.  That's what we do so you can select ether the blue sky or this new fpga file.

Download here

Insert the USB thumb drive in the DAC.

Go to the system menu (long press the menu button)(right button till you see system)(right button til you see load firmware)(enter)(scroll down till you see fpga1_228_APSaudio. Enter to load. Reboot.

In the menu info screen the fpga firmware will show as 228_massive

Give it a try and let us know what you think.

You can always go back to Mount Blue Sky fpga just load that firmware in the load firmware section instead f the new one.

This is just the fpga firmware and not the newest user interface firmware that blue sky firmware from PS Audio installed.

Hi Jeff. A bit of an explanation regarding this custom FW update would be helpful. Thanks.

All who have our upgraded DAC’s should try our new Balanced XLR Galvanic isolators.

These work by isolating the ground path so the DAC will never have an issue with ground loops from the analog outputs.

Ground loops are a major cause of noise and jitter in these DAC’s.  We immediately notice a larger more open sound stage when using these especially when paired with our transformers and upgrades.

These are only for the MK1 as the MK2 already has this feature built in.

These work on most preamps as long as it doesn’t use an opamp for it’s inputs.  We recomend using a high quality preamp.
