The key is to have a good digital streaming system, so you’re not tempted to buy every freakin’ records rolling out of vinyl stamper 😊
Excellent sounding LPs
To follow up on my post about “ Playable LPs” is a question I was really trying to get at. I used the wrong term in “Playable.” What I’m really trying to ascertain is what percentage of LPs sound really good on your system? I have 2000-3000 LPs but they vary widely in SQ. I’m sure you would agree 90% is not the case.
So, to rephrase my question, what percentage of your records are near or at audiophile quality?

Streaming (and I have a decent rig for that) doesn't make any difference for my vinyl purchase decisions. I just buy whatever records I wish to have. For whatever reason, I get more engaged in the music with vinyl than with streaming. |
You may have taken my post out of context. For those of us trying to keep the vinyl collections manageable, buying just anything doesn’t really help the cause. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’ve managed to keep my collection around 350 records in last five years. What I can say is this — every single one of them delivers a goosebump moment the instant the stylus drops into the groove. Quality over quantity 🎶✨ |
I suppose each to their own. I have some 5000 LPs I've collected over the last 50 years, and still collect about 200 records a year. I love it, and I enjoy the entire collection. I wouldn't dream of eliminating any of them. I get goosebumps no matter which ones I play. The really magical goosebumps often come about when I play a record I haven't heard in years, or even decades. I don't arbitrarily just "buy anything". I buy what interests me and what I want to listen to. I never buy a record I don't intend to crack open and play within a day or two of its arrival on my doorstep. And once a record enters my collection it never leaves. :) |
@lalitk +1 I do respect your restraint and discipline of quality(SQ) over quantity. With only Jazz/Vocal/Classical and the obvious Pop/Rock selections you can build a nearly 100% Audiophile vinyl collection. Unfortunately my taste in many different music genres can’t be that confined. Without getting too personal what is the music genre breakdown of your vinyl collection and what % do you consider has Audiophile(not near) SQ? |
