Diving into Power... Cable recs for my system and ears....?

Hello All,

I have been enjoying a full system upgrade over the past year... the interconnects and digital cables were an eye opener! Now I am bringing my attention to power...

I am currently running my components off a power strip that is 10' long... supposedly designed for audio. All my major components are plugged into this. This power strip is plugged into a wall outlet, which is shared with some lights etc. Also plugged into this power strip is my wifi router.

I have a few questions:

-What is the most important in regards to impact to overall sound if I were to upgrade the power cords? My guess its: 1: Amp.... 2: DAC... 3: Streamer... is that right? Or is it the opposite?

-Should I have an electrician setup a dedicated outlet to my electrical box, and run my main components off that? Is this worth it? or is there another setup between my electrical box and my components? Or if there is no detectible buzz, should I simply not bother?

-If I should begin looking into power cords as the first upgrade here, what cord would you recommend if I yearn for the following: Extreme startling presence and separation... magic midrange, highs blissful, voice acoustic jazz violin, piano... essentially startling presence as if the instrument is right there...

I have been enjoying Anticables, and they have a well rated cable in the $300 range which supposedly is as good or better than $1000 cables... but I am open to recommendations...!

Thank you all!

Richard

Currently my system (also outlined in my virtual system profile) is as follows:

    • SPEAKERS: Pure Audio Project Duet 15 Horn (Mundorf Silver Gold Oil Cap upgrade and customized crossover w/high pass filter and sweeter meds), Anticable 4.2 Flex Internal wire)
    • STREAMER: Nagra Streamer (Cardas Clear Coaxial)
    • DAC: HoloAudio Spring 2 Level 3 Kitsune edition (Silversmith Fidelium RCA Interconnects)
    • AMP: PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium HP Integrated (RAY TUBES EL34 Reserve power tubes, RADIOTECHNIQUE NOS 12AU7 Gain tubes w/Mullard NOS and Brimar NOS tubes (Anticables 4.2 Flex to speaker)
    • PHONO: Music Hall MMF-9 and McIntosh MP 100 Preamp (Audio-Technica AT160ML MM Cartridge, Anticable 7.3 and Silversmith fidelium Interconnects)

@squared80 I could show you in 30 seconds the differences and I'll bet you $10,000 that you'll hear it

@whyrichard run dedicated lines with outlets as close to your system as possible. Closer to your gear means shorter cables can be used. Directly correlated to the price of cables. Big difference in price when we’re talking 1 or 1.5 meter power cords vs same cables in 3 meter length.
I use 1.5 - 2m cords.
I have two duplex outlets on each one of the two dedicated lines. I currently have my DAC and amp on one circuit and my Roon Nucleus plugged into another (nucleus uses cheap switch mode power supply and I want to keep it isolated from my components.
I have Shunyata and Furutech outlets on each circuit. I currently use Shunyata for everything. Furutech GTX-D Rhodium isn’t a good match sound wise with my current gear

Good choice in getting the additional direct line.

The preferred standard length of a power cord is 2 meters. I got a one meter Audio Quest Hurricane and a 2 meter. I had them for a long time. It was amazingly obvious the 2 meter sounded better. When I asked my dealer about it he said “twice as much power conditioning”.

if it is only 10 feet.. get a 3 meter power cord.

@vthokie83

I second your use of the Furutech, but, having had the Gold and Rhodium outlets, I would  suggest skipping over to the NCF generation. Furutech has a "cool" sound to it (the interconnects and speaker cable are the same), and there is slightly more orchestral "color" to the NCF second generation outlets. Still "cool"- sounding, but there is a bit more color to acoustic instruments.

As for the OP: I don’t think anyone can predict the results of a power cord. I have had Nordost Valhalla, Tyr and Tyr 2, Frey and Frey 2, most Shunyata (top of the line) power cord: Sigma NR, Sigma NR V2, Anaconda, etc. You get the picture.

Anyway, I usually start with the CD player, as that is the source, and it works fine. However, I also found that my Venom NR V10 on the CD player sounded as good as Anaconda. I attributed that to the CD player’s limitations (it was my most favored Arcam FMJ CD23). A very good CD player, but not a ne-plus-ultra player. Going to the Sigma NR was overkill: the Arcam couldn’t demonstrate everything the Sigma could do, although moving the power cord to the ASR Emitter Exclusive certainly allowed the system  to shine.

You’ll have to do this on your own. My only suggestion (which I’m sure others have already said) is to use the most minimally miked music you have and make sure it’s acoustic instruments if at all possible. Highly "processed" music probably is too engineered to allow a component to show its true mettle. I finally realized that this is why the "snake oil" brigade believes what they do: they are (mostly) unfamiliar with acoustic instruments and they try to make judgements off a poorly engineered recording (if they even use recordings). Adele’s ’21’ sounds  reasonably decent on a $30k system, as does Amy Winehouse (those were NOT great recordings), whereas a Mercury Living Presence  Stravinsky CD sounds fantastic on the same system. The whole High End was formed by people wanting to hear a Steinway piano sound like a Steinway, and not a Bosendorfer. I think it gets forgotten about why the High End even blossomed. Almost every audiophile designer 40 or 50 years ago used acoustic instruments to design speakers, amps, electronics. That’s why older music from the 40s through the 80s usually sounds better than more modern music: fewer mics, WAY less engineering tricks and mostly acoustic instruments. It also explains the "my-friends-and-I-went-to-listen-and-we-didn’t-hear-anything" experiences.

Hello all,

Super grateful.

I am thinking of two dedicated lines. One with a Furutech GTX-D NCF Rhodium, and the other a Furutech GTX-D Gold... that way I can experiment a little.

The 10 Guage Romex supply line, is this the stuff?
