Parasound A21+. Easily available new about $4k, bit less used. Plenty of power. Matched it with my Wilson Sabrinas (Wilsons are notoriously hard to drive) and they came alive better than any other amp I've tried with them.
High current amp search
Hello, so as the title says, I'm looking for a 200+ wats amp (8ohm) that will double it's power down to 2 ohms but importantly also check all the audiophile boxes so strong, articulate, fast bass, smooth resolving mid-range and extended non fatiguing highs. It's proving to be rather difficult because hardly any manufacturers list output into 2ohms. Budget is around 4000$ so I'm looking at mostly used. Besides something like the Krell FPB 300/400 CX which can be had for that much , what else can be recommended?

OP - What speakers are you driving? I understand the problems with underpowered amps, myself. I have a pair of Martin-Logan Sequel II's that I originally bought with an Aragon 4004 power amp. It had the juice to run them great, but I later upgraded to a used Krell 200-S with the same power ratings. Everything was a bit more refined with the Krell, but still had the weighty slam of low bass. Unfortunately it was fried by lightning and due to budget issues at the time I settled for a Vincent 331. I need more power to be happy. I would consider Krell, or especially a more recent Mark Levinson, like the 332 or 333 series which can be found for about $3,500 used. The big drawback for them is they weight a ton, like my old Krell. I'm 65 years old now so the weight does make the decision tough. Similarly, a very good friend of mine has Sound Lab A1 full range electrostatic speakers. He has always had a fantastic sounding system driven with Jeff Rowland electronics. Jeff makes some nice mono amps that I would consider, but they are more difficult to find on the used market. I haven't heard a Class D amp that impressed me yet, unfortunately. |
@faustuss crown does make good amplifiers, the xti series are meant to be connected to a pc and have total control of basically the whole amp from attack speed, eq, crossover, db gain or decrease, delay, and more also can set the limiters so you don’t blow the speakers |
