FWIW, many surge protectors are parallel-mode using MOVs, which are sacrificial. One or more power surges and they are toast. They are responsible for many house fires.
Series-mode protectors, however, use a large inductor with triac or SCR controlled capacitor banks. They are rated to withstand 1000 "hits" of 6000V/3000A surges without fail. Zero Surge, SurgeX and Brickwall all provide series-mode protection.
I've been using Zero Surge protectors for years without any problems. It took care of a nasty thump/pop coming out of the speakers when ceiling fans were turned off. Have to admit that bass slam was slightly reduced with the amp plugged into the protector, but the protection offered to the equipment was a good tradeoff.
