If you are not going to convert to fiber, yes keep the cable as short as possible. Supra makes a superior CAT 8 ethernet cable, sjofn HiFi is the supplier to the US.....here's a link to the 1 meter cable

Lots of attention to cable...best USB Cardas / upgraded Cardas forged connectors to speaker cables and the like.  Another vote for DH Labs as they provide a terrific plug for reasonable money.  The grip is the zip.
