What you're listening to in a CD player is the DAC, not the transport.   The CD reader is just what you get from a $20 CDROM drive.   Really.

It's the DAC you're listening to.

I run a Tascam CD player because it's a piece of pro gear, and being pro, is more durable and reliable than consumer stuff.  I run an optical line from it to my DAC.  The sonics from the CD player are identical to the same track being played back from my laptop digital files.

But if you've really got $6k burning a hole in your pocket, then you're the kind of guy this industry loves.
Another vote for the Yammy CD-S2100. It seldom fails to elicit the "I can't believe that's digital!" response from my analog-loving audiophile guests. At $3 grand, I absolutely believe it's the sweet spot for price and performance. It boasts an excellent DAC and plays SACDs wonderfully, should the OP eventually see the light in that regard.

Enjoy the tunes.

Find a dCS P8i.  You can buy one for $4-5k and you’ll have SACD capability and a world class DAC.

Had the Luxman D-06 and wasn’t happy with it: to “plat”, not very musical. For me the best is CEC (with separate dac) and I do like the Ear cd-player by de Paravicini ( with Telefunken tubes). 20 y. ago: I had the  Sphinx Project 32 :an amazing player!  My next , I hope Wavac: I have still the MD 805m. (Monoblocks)Or the Metronome technologie.
