October 12th, 2012 - The Speaker Contestants Meet Zinfinity

This month we have a very interesting combination. Our 2012 speaker contest winners and runners up will be bringing in their speakers for us to listen to. We'll play some of the judge’s selections from the contest. We also have Zsolt Mathe of Z-Infinity demonstrating his tube based preamp and amplifiers. We'll hear the Zinfinity amps through the club speakers as well as the speaker contest speakers.

Zsolt Mathe, founder of Z-Infinity Audio has had an early passion for music and electronics. Growing up in Europe, he was educated in a music school while building his first electronic amplifiers at an age of 12. When he moved to the Pacific Northwest, he studied at University of Washington earning degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics and Math. When he established Z-Infinity Audio he wanted to bring the heritage of what he learned growing up in Europe – both from his music and engineering education. As such, he applies these principles when building each Z-Infinity amplifier to ensure that they are musically excellent, simple and employ proven designs that stand the test of time.

Hello, I'm a hi-fi enthusiast especially with SET tube amps and turntables, wondering if there's enough similar folks in Capitol Hill, Ballard, or other cool neighborhoods of Seattle proper to start a little club? Like a rotating meetup at people's houses to hear the latest audio setup. Email [email protected] if interested.

I just wanted to bring to the attention of Seattle and other Northwest audiophiles, and PNWAS members that the Seattle Wind Symphony plays a concert Saturday, 7 PM, February 23, 2013 at the Fist Free Methodist Church auditorium. The church is located on the North side of Queen Anne Hill. It is acoustically quite good and used by several groups for concerts and recording.

The Seattle Wind Symphony is comprised of approx. 60 players, including a full complement of woodwinds, brass, percussion, string bass, harp and piano. Many are music teachers in the region, and about half of the personnel hold graduate degrees in music.

I posted here as the band plays the same kind of literature as the Eastman Wind Ensemble, Cleveland Winds, etc., whose recordings are often treasured by audiophiles. This program includes "Incantation and Dance" by John Barnes Chance, "Suite of Old American Dances" by Robert Russell Bennett, "Enigma Variations" by Sir Edward Elgar, Percy Grainger's "Molly on the Shore", "Fantasia for Alto Saxophone" by Claude T. Smith and other pieces.

[As done by Mercury and Telarc, the concerts are recorded using a minimalist miking/audiophile approach-three spaced omnidirectional microphones, (Neumann TLM 50) and a Nagra VI digital recorder at 96/24.]

April 11th, Thursday, at 7:30pm - First Sound Audio

Don't miss our April meeting when we'll be joined by Emmanuel Go of First Sound Audio (Renton, WA), to demonstrate his fantastic line of handmade tube preamplifiers. Emmanuel is renowned for his attention to detail in his products and he'll discuss some of his philosophies and approaches to design and building. We'll have two Fist Sound models on hand as well as Emmanuel's Berning OTL (output-transformer-less) tube amplifier (and possibly a solid state amplifier), all connected to the club's Genesis 7.2 speakers. Guests are welcome!
