Damn, I thought it was the klutzy move of dropping the needle on a record !!!!!
"A needle drop is a version of a music album that has been transferred from a vinyl record to digital audio or other formats"

The purpose of a needle drop is to report to the publishing company, such as ASCAP, what music has been transferred so that royalties can be paid to the artist. You are responsible for reporting this and paying a fee. (only is enforced in the professional world, typically when copyrighted music is used in a TV/radio commercial).
Needle drops are also used to offer a direct comparison between phono cartridges, tonearms etc, utilizing a controlled environment i.e. equipment and source material.

I’ve heard needle drops of the same song using the same equipment and level match for the output for 5 separate phono cartridges; it was an eye opening experience.
it's what your pet should not do in the house....now go walk your turntable..
