Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

Keep me posted & Happy Listening!

Dancastagna, Thielrules and all,
glad to know Rob is very busy in fixing our loved Thiel’s gear, there is no reason now to overwhelm him with emails and phone calls, I’ll wait patiently.  Thanks,
Dino
Hello everybody, I live in Italy and own a pair of CS3.5. When I read that Mr. Gillum was repairing Thiel speakers, I shipped the CS3.5 bass equalizer for him to restore.
He finally received it last May, 5th and by mail told me it would take a couple of days to check it. Not receiving any reply within a reasonable time I decided to email back two days ago with no luck. So I called many times during normal working hrs in KY and again only answering machine. So today I sent a email to Mr. Tom Thiel, Thiel's former co-founder and to this forum.
Maybe Mr Gillum is just very busy, and I truly hope so, that he is unable to reply and still had no time to get back with me, or he lost my email, but if somebody can tell me how to contact him I would appreciate.
Thank you
Dino

Hello everybody, I received a email by Mr Gillum he cannot repair my cs3.5 bass equalizer.
Despair and frustration, any idea or help? Without it the speakers simply do not work fine in my room, so does anybody know somebody able to fix it? Or where I could find a new used working one?
Thank you
Dino
Thielrules, thank you for your advise.
I wanted to create a vintage set so I started 4 or 5 years ago to build it. I begun it with a power amp Accuphase P360, perfect no issue, then I found the Tuner T108, works perfectly with the ant Magnum Dynalab. Then I bought the pre a C260 with many issues, power knob, mc input. It is still under repair, and I could not listen with the Thiel, purchased just two month ago or so. So I am using a pre Proton AP400, and the sound is very thin.
The C260 a a complete parametric eq that allows to increase the frequencies below 100 and or 40 hz. In addition it has a presence control that increases low frequencies when the volume is set below -50 dB. Do you think that I could compensate the lack of the Thiel CS3.5 bass eq with the low tone controls?

Thank you

Oblgny, do you have Thiel CS3.5 bass equalizer properly working? If so how much are you asking? I am not familiar with the policy of this forum so please let me know if we have to talk separately.
Jafant and all, thank you for your support, today I sent another mail to Mr Gillum asking if he can keep my eq and take all the time of this world to fix it. Fingers crossed....
Cheers
Oblgny, thank you,
can you please ship USPS to a PO BOX?  it should be 14$ insured, this is the price I paid to send mine to Mr Gillum for the eq. Let me know if you are fine with it and how I can pay you and I’ll send the address.
Thank you again,
Oblgny,
THANK YOU, I received the Thiel CS3.5 bass eq and yet not tested as it goes 110V versus 220V in Italy. I had a tech to check it, I would rather not like to use it with a noisy transformer.
Again thank you for giving it for free.
Going to the one I sent to Mr Gillum, well, still not yet received it back, I do not know if he kept trying to fix or what. If someone gets some info on this I would appreciate.

The tweeter and the midrange of the left speaker of my 3.5 just do not work. I was listening at high volume in the attempt to override the hiss and noise from the right channel when all of a sudden only the woofer was working. Any tought? Anyone with the same issue? Thank you
Jafant,
I run my 3.5’s with a pre Accuphase c260, power amp Accuphase p360, cd Marantz UD7007, tuntable denon dp55k, tonearm SME 3009, all bought used except the cd. Cables kimber KS, and Audioquest both balanced. OBLGN also gave me his eq for FREE but the pre had some issue and was never gonna able using it as only one channel worked when the tape loop was on. I then bought another bass eq on eBay, same issue. Previously I shipped my original bass eq (count is 3...) to Mr Gillum that was unable to repair (mayby I didn’t say it was 220V?) and NEVER ship it back to me (Italy).

Thielrules
Now I am really without music in my house and happy to listen scan speak is providing replacement, which I hope will be for both tweeter and midrange. Will the crossover need some modifications as well?
thanks

tomthiel,

Thank you for the update/advise on noise.

Looking forward seeing you and Rob getting back to us with a positive outcome on midrange test. Any guesstimate on price? As for the tweeter, is this produced (Dynaudio D28AF, correct?)? if not what can be used without altering the crossover filter?

Lastly, if Rob still has my Bass eq (220V) and is gonna repairing one day, I am ALWAYS available to pay for the refurbishment.

Jafant,

Thank you for appreciating my gear....

Unsound

Thank you for the advise but at the moment I would keep as vintage as possible. I'll read anyway previous post on this issue.

Tomthiel

To recap, you and Rob are diggin' in to find a solution for both tweeter and midrange. Great! I am staying still patiently waiting for any news here!!!
You are right, I played loud (very much loud) in clip mode for some seconds, my Accuphase maybe does not like going that low (ohms)....
Has anybody ever had issue with the woofer, you know yesterday looking at the speakers I though it was a shame that a so well maintained pair of speakers was not working, there is letterally no scratch, no dent, nothing... but looking better with no grille... the midrange (both), It was like they just came from a "desert storm" campaign, they look like they are very, very used, but also looking at the ads on ebay or so they are the like, just do not fit with the other speakers and the beautiful wooden/black speaker.
My woofer instead is really, I believe, like it was in the 90's, shining, the foam intact... just thinking out loud
I love these speakers and I do not want to think to move on something different... I listen to a lot of speaker weekly, and the only decent one I would pick are Kharma, Martin Logan, B&W (not many...) Sonus Faber.... whose price is 100 times more the 3.5.....
Tom thiel,
this is really great news for all this community forum, I will be happy to limp as long as it takes and yes crossover tweek after.
Question: do you plan then to get rid of the 3.5 bass eq or will it be part of the equation?
Tomthiel,
Balanced is something I would definitely support, and all the project itself is amazing.

Hope everybody enjoyed Easter.
Just a new chapter of my Thiel 3.5 Odyssey. For those who did not read the previous thread I burned one tweeter and one midrange of my left cs3.5. Today after one month I finally checked with a new midrange (different model, borrowed) and luckily the speaker works,so the xover is safe!
Now I need to change both or get them repaired. ( I am stubborn, I am not going on to YG, Kharma or B&W...)
On ebay I found  this guy selling a working tweeter ( https://www.ebay.com/itm/254177357767?ul_noapp=true) for 110 Euros which I do not know if it's worth it, but still it leaves out the question: how to fix the midrange? Also I noticed that this midrange was already repaired, by comparing this and the other there are clearly some traces of glue surrounding the dome.... ( I cannot enclose pics).
Any advise advise is welcome, options I am thinking are:
  1. Try to repair locally (fast and cheap maybe...), with the risk to damage irremediably both....
  2. Get with Rob to get his advise and a (possibly) quote. This scares me a bit since my last experience with him...
  3. Wait for him and Mr. Thiel to issue the cs3.5 R with a new tweeter, midrange and X/O (gesstimate on timing and cost?).

Unsound & Tomthiel,
Thank you.
Tom, glad to hear you will eventually be working on the CS3.5 R, so it leaves to me no chance but then repair my gears.
So, If unable to fix locally, I will definetively reach out Rob for a preliminary opinion. I am pretty sure something went wrong but it was not intentional.
Thielrules will be talking about my speakers to Rob sometimes this week or next; he has to fix his two midrages too so I will be waiting for him. I believe the midrange could be repaired, as for the tweeter it looks harder to fix it when it is blown looking on comments on the web....

Bluetone
I desperately need the tweeter, mine being not working if you could ship at my expense I would greatly appreciate it.
Please let me know.

I tried to get the TM3, stopped bidding at $ 550 , ouctionended at $650 700 for most of them now there a guy on the bay asking for $1850, just wondering if he is ever getting that much.
They had to give voice to my pre and power amp Phase Linear 400 and 4000 series 2, my very old second room audio set....
