Tekton Design Moab

Ordered a pair just now. In Dark Gray, to which Tammy immediately said, "Oh the Charcoal is beautiful!" Charcoal sounds better than Dark Gray (even though we are talking about the same color!) so Charcoal it is!

My beloved Talon Khorus do still sound awfully good. It will be interesting to see how the Moabs stock out of the box compare with these tweaked and modded warhorses. Both the strength, and the weakness, of the Khorus is using the 10" woofer to cover so much midrange. Its a strength because it makes for a very smooth and cohesive sound. But its a weakness because its asking a lot of such a large driver to go so high. Talon makes up for it with their isobaric design. Mounted inside and directly behind the woofer is another identical driver facing the opposite direction. The idea is this relieves the front facing driver of having to compress the air inside the cabinet. This does allow for a much faster response, and is a big reason for the wonderful music the Khorus produces.

I have a feeling however it is no match for Eric Alexander's ultra-low mass driver array solution. Only one way to know for sure. So we will just have to see!

MC - You’re right, forgot they’re powered. So much the better. How would the 4-10’s be configured in a DBA?I have a second Dayton and was thinking about calling Duke for 4 more subs so I would have DBA enhancements in a second system.
What are the benefits of using powered subs in a DBA?
Congratulations again on your Moabs!
@millercarbon +1  This is a good example of why I no longer care all that much for measurements and specifications.
Microphone distances being subject to reverberations vs. open space, etc.

Not to detract from the thread focus (Moabs), but I just bought a pair of Harbeth SHL5+ 40ths.

Almost didn't because nothing was "impressive" about the measurements.

Then almost did after reading reviews. But still was trigger shy because of the "measurements".  Not bad, just not impressive.

Then I listened to them.
What else matters?  (Aside from reliability, servicing and parts)
Bought them, listening to them, thoroughly enjoying them.
Not reading about them.
Not measuring them.

Moving next month to a bigger place. Will go from a (10' x 12' minus closets) office to a (14' x 17' which if I remember correctly is not far from MCs room dimensions) den and am now considering DIs or Moabs for the larger space.

So I too anxiously await reviews from millercarbon.
glupson,
No worries, I do not understand much about measurements either.

If by "too realistic" you mean unintended coloration to mimic the piano, I understand completely.

I have not heard the ATC or Spendors but they have come up in some of the Harbeth reviews.  Both compare favorably. I remember reading something about the Spendors having some variation sonically around the D7 iterations.

I might have gone with either of those if I had a chance to hear them.

@glupson - I did listen to them at home first before buying. The Harbeths will be replacing my Ologe 5s in my new office space so will not be selling them.

The interest in the DIs or Moabs is for a floor stander in the new listening (14’ x 17’) room.

I must agree with you on the Polks as an intriguing option though.

Just wanted to share my confusion/gradual experience/understanding regarding measurements almost putting the blinders on me.

MC may seem harsh to some, but as with many other points, I think he pretty much nailed this one.

There really is a lot more going on than measurements.

Not trying to blow smoke up anyone’s whatever.

What sold me on the Harbeths was auditioning them with solo piano music.

I have an inherited Steinway medium grand that I practice on. I am not a professional pianist. But listening to the same pieces I am practicing through the Harbeths is what did it for me. Despite what the measurements read.

Sure, Alan Shaw prides his speaker development as based on voicing them for vocals.

But as a student of classical piano, and also as the youngest of 5 piano students in my family, I am quite familiar with the sound of pianos.

The piano, like a box speaker, has it’s own resonantly tuned box.
This box is subject to and affected by acoustical room treatments similar to a box speaker.

This box also displays unique colorations similar to a box speaker.

In my experience, the Harbeths portrayed the most accurate reproduction of solo piano.

There is no way I would know this based on measurements.

I have read a lot about the Tektons. Never heard any of them. But will certainly try to before buying.

Congrats MC!Thanks for the review!
Was seriously considering the DIs for the room in the new place. But it just seems like a no brainer value wise to step up to the Moabs.
Just not sure a 14 x 16 room would be big enough.
Looking forward to hearing more of your impressions as you tweak!
