We argue because the alternative of pulling out a 45 and silencing the other party does not go down well with friends and family, whether ours or the former annoyance. 
Turntable L/R Balance
You can fix the problem with getting the proper balance back by reversing some interconnects down stream so that the left is once again left and so forth. Have you switched back to see if it returns?

I don't know about fast but pranawire is well worth looking into and the cable company has a lending library that will allow you to demonstrate them in your own system

The most haunting music you ever heard?
Rx8man it sounds like a film score. Probably science fiction or supernatural. I realize that's a fairly large genre but I don't think it is classical or even jazz so that's what I am left with. 
how do you level a turntable?
Back in my youth when we wanted to level something we would either take it up to a third or fourth floor and drop it out the window or run a car over it. Guaranteed to level it.

Just acquired a good copy (LP)of Edwin Fischer playing and Wilhelm Furtwangler conducting Beethoven's 5th piano concerto. A really amazing version well worth hearing.
