When someone tells you it's a $40,000 amp, does it sound better?
@roxy54  Which is why, 97 times out of 100, I prefer to sit at home (saving me travel time), in a room that is in part specifically designed for listening, in front of an audio system that evolved over the  54 years I have spent fiddling with it,...
When someone tells you it's a $40,000 amp, does it sound better?
@mrdecibel Being at a live show also has compromises: the person sitting in front of you, the one sitting to one side of you, the one sitting in back of you, the quality of the seating, how far back, to one side, or close you are sitting, the dep...
What is the “World’s Best Cartridge”?
The one that sounds best to you is the best.    That said, I use a Koetsu Onyx. I have a Koetsu Rosewood Signature as a backup. I use a Grado for 78s.
What Neutral Means in Reviews & Our Discussions? Are We Confusing Tame/Flat For Neutral?
As we all hear differently, and as the term neutral begs the question “neutral in relation to what?”, I don’t know that the question can ever be satisfyingly settled.    That said, the anecdotal answer that makes most sense to me is that your sys...
Most underrated female recording artists..
@moonwatcher Make sure you capture #s 5-10 from me. I am sure hardly anyone here knows who they are, especially the two from Peru. The others are from Mexico (the Billy Holiday of Mexico), Cuba/Miami, Hungary and the Congo.
Most underrated female recording artists..
@moonwatcher  Oh, cool. My bad!
Most underrated female recording artists..
@moonwatcher I think it may be useful to provide a short list of artists that you have actually heard, not a list pulled from an algorithm that captures every vocalist in the known and parallel universes. My list: Karen Dalton Sandy Denny Laura...
5 Dumb Things Audiophiles Believes.
This guy is not as entertaining as he thinks he is.
different people may hear the same sound differently...
Poppy Crum of Dolby has done extensive and humbling research on this issue. if some folks in this forum took her work to heart, there might be less bickering about this or that component, connect, technique, etc. Once your system reaches a certai...
Joni Mitchell remasters on the way
I found this article to be scatterbrained, poorly thought out etc, but it does do an effective job of exposing the “Remastering Industrial Complex”. As I have said many times: take care of your original or initial pressings from 20-70 years ago: ...
Phono Stage Upgrade
The cheapskate here. I use a Shure A86A SUT.  Cost? About 150 bucks.
Bookshelf speakers that renders 3D soundstage
I agree with @tomcarr  I've been at it since 1968. The most dramatic change I encountered in the areas that you are looking for occurred when I built a room that is in part dedicated to listening.
15 ohm speakers yea or nay?
I use 16 ohm speakers because my amps like them. Or,...you could say that I use OTL tube amps because my speakers like them.
What are/were the best sounding cheap components you have ever had?
- Shure A86A step up transformer. $125.  - BBE 282ri sonic maximizer. $75.
Recommendations for HiFi Listening Room
I thought you were going to ask about room treatment.  my room is a similar size and shape. The walls are covered with 5.5” and the ceiling with 15.5” of rockwool, which is then covered with fire resistant burlap.  The rest of my system, seen at...
