Your Most Prominent Audio Component
There may be little variability in the bio-electrical-chemistry of the brain, but there is tremendous variability in the discipline of listening. Thats one reason why why one cartridge can sound genuinely great to 100 people but can sound just as ...
When Was The Audio Golden Age?
@phusis    Well said. 👍
Futterman. Jump in? Or, not so fast...
I really don’t understand why @atmasphere seems to start out with anything he has to say about Futtermans by trashing NYAL. Or is he not? Is it me? It sounds that way. I have been planning on writing a short - or maybe not so short - memoir of my...
For city apartment dweller audiophiles. Have you ever had neighbors banging on your walls?
Uhm, yeah, sure! Decades ago, I had a sociopathic neighbor who got angry with our Seven Days Magazine neighbors downstairs from us whose staff worked at all hours of the morning to meet publishing deadlines. One night, they are at it again, he g...
Listening Room
@audition__audio - Two things about me: A ) I’m a cheap rat bastard. I find the cheapest way to get results worth 5 to 100 times or more than what I spent. And B ) I’m lazy. Well not really lazy, I just want to get the results I want as quickly,...

@gents  lol you are the comedian today, aren’t you?  I am a cheap rat bastard: over 55 years, I have spent as little as possible to get as maximum as possible performance out of my gear. It’s come out to $850 per year on average over that time, ...

Listening Room
From the "about" page on my website: "Vinyl Sundays" is a music appreciation concept. It was first launched as a public venture as "Classic Album Sundays" by Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy in London in 2010 and has spread to cities in Europe, Australia a...
Surge protector
I recommend this unit. It's been working wonderfully for me.   https://www.crutchfield.com/S-Abe790BIk50/p_756ELT15PF/Furman-Elite-15-PFi.html
Leaving tube amps on.
If I’m stepping away for an hour or two, I leave it on. Longer than that, it goes off. The room is so well insulated that leaving them on when not in use heats up the room.
MC-MM-MI CARTRIDGES . DO YOU KNOW WHICH HAS BETTER QUALITY PERFORMANCE? REALLY?
@pindac You err in assuming that I am brand loyal. I have listened to a number of cartridges over the decades. It’s simply that none moved me to make a change. If one did, I would have made the change. That said, after the Onyx was gifted to me,...
Listening Room
@immatthewj  My background listening was limited to earphones and a Walkman while doing 20 laps around Prospect Park on my bicycle or some such thing. Now I don’t do background listening at all.    when I put on my audio system, I sit and listen.
One answer to an oft-asked question.
These days, I don’t hear much new music. It’s all that I can do to keep up with the music I have.  When I do hear new music, it’s usually because somebody recommended something to me.
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system
I used to have the top of the line DBX equalizer. I no longer need it. I have two BBE Sonic Maximizers. When used properly - discreetly - they subtly alter the phasing of the signal. The effect is to give more punch at the bottom, more crispness ...
