@colossalsound  "The best analogy is camera focus. If you take a DSLR and achieve perfect focus, then slightly rotate the focus ring even by a tiny amount, the entire image immediately loses sharpness. Vinyl playback behaves in a very similar way...
Warning signs you have a worn out cartridge
Here's an article I wrote on the topic:   https://www.thebrokenrecord.net/the-fascinating-lifecycle-of-our-stereo-cartridge/
Dr. Feickert Volare or Acoustic Signature XXL
I installed a cartridge on a Volare for a friend recently. His has the OL Silver tonearm that I believe comes standard with the Volare. It is tough to make small adjustments on VTF on that arm, and it doesn't allow for azimuth adjustment. Both of ...
Led Zeppelin II on vinyl
@chrisoshea I'm reminded of that famous quote from Abe Lincoln.
Led Zeppelin II on vinyl
@seymour-krelborn You say that like I've never actually listened to the entire album! The whole thing is recorded well, although "Whole Lotta" certainly stands out, which it ought to. It's cut louder than the other tracks.
Led Zeppelin II on vinyl
@audphile1  Well, you said you're not looking to pay "insane amounts of money" for a copy, which suggests that you're not in the market for an "RL" "ss" copy which is the best version out there. Meanwhile the 2014 Page remaster is the next best o...
Led Zeppelin II on vinyl
@audphile1 Nonsense! Zep 2 in one of the best recorded rock albums of all time and good copies hold up quite well to critical listening. And IMO, it's all fodder for critical listening. Nothing wrong with doing both at the same time. Get the Jim...
How often do you check tracking force?
@billstevenson "I have been checking stylus assemblies since working for a high end hi-fi shop in Seattle during my college years beginning in 1970 and I have not ever seen that happen." That's because the assembly doesn't look noticeably wors...
How often do you check tracking force?
I agree with audphile1. It depends on how often you use your turntable. I also agree with billstevenson. If you are removing the headshell and changing cartridges then you are essentially starting from scratch every time you do that. What I don'...
Conrad Johnson Phono Preamps
I had a CJ TEA2HG for a while, and before that their ET3 preamp with phono stage and before that, a PV11. I loved the sound of the TEA2, but 1 mv is pretty low output and 55 db is not all that high for a phono stage. And given the fact that CJ's ...
Vinyl foibles
Ditto on cleaning BEFORE playing. Especially with brand new records.
UHQR 45 rpm Vinyl "Kind of Blue"
I'm glad to know someone else out there ti hearing how bad many of these modern reissues sound. Maybe we just stop buying them? Perhaps that would push them to start making better sounding records.
To antiskate or not antiskate
"To conclude, I need antiskate in some amount even with a long arm but it's alot less than with my 9 ish arms ." I would suggests watching J.R. Boisclair's videos on anti-skate for different length tonearms before coming to that conclusion. It's ...
To antiskate or not antiskate
Use blank side of LP, raise arm, get platter spinning 33 rpm. Lower arm, it gets pulled into the center, that is natural skating force add a little anti-skating force, lower arm, a bit more. Check it at various distances from the outer and inn...
To antiskate or not antiskate
You won't regret getting the WallySkater. And while you're at it, if you don't already have one of these "azimuth / vta" blocks, I find them very handy for getting the azimuth setting into the ballpark. Later, after the cantilever on your cartri...
