What are the sexiest components ever made?
Altec A7's, McIntosh Mc 75's, McIntosh C20-all very industrial/utilitarian looking but a great looking set up. Like a chopped Model A with a Chrysler 331 hemi or an Olds 394. You know you have something special.  Also any early B&O-look great ...
H/K - Rabco ST-8
Have both a ST 7 and ST 8 and both working-rebuilt by me.  The ST 7 was problematic since the drive wheel on the arm drive shaft had a gum rubber wheel which disintegrated probably withing ten years.  I replaced mine with a neoprene rubber VCR whe...
Harman Kardon TA-230 tuning knobs
Can you send a picture of the other knobs to match?  Does it  have a round shaft (serrated with a small slit in the middle) or a "D" shaped shaft (smooth with a D shaped cutout).  I think I may have one knob if it is the "D" shaped shaft. It is br...
Futterman H3a OTL amp for sale seen on on eBay!
Futtermans like high impedance and were designed for 16 ohm and above speakers.  These were very popular in early hi-fi. Will work OK but the low limit is 8 ohms.  They are much more efficient the higher the impedance.  Never heard of them taking ...
Check out Louis Armstrong's vintage audio system
Looks like a pair of Tandberg tape decks, a Marantz 7(C?) pre amp and a Marantz 10B tuner.  Record changer is a Dual 1019 but the arm doesn't look right.  Would like to see the power amp and speakers.
My list of seller red flags
Red flags? How about the same item posted here for one price and posted on a very popular site for twice the price?  It is happening now for one item.  I imagine the seller knows that the people on this site are a lot more sophisticated and know a...
Need help on McIntosh meters
If you are going to take the unit face plate off anyway to replace the meter, switch the right and left meters and see if the problem goes away r reverses. If switching the L & R meters does not correct the problem, then there is a drive circu...
Need help on McIntosh meters
Most likely the meter.  McIntosh is great on parts inventory and since this is not an old unit it should be readily available. The meter has a d'arsonval movement and are quite delicate not unlike a watch movement with a hair spring and two tiny p...
Lets talk dedicated lines
AC power is a funny bugger and it helps to understand how “noise” gets onto the line. Basically noise are tiny “spikes” imprinted onto the sinusoidal AC wave from various sources. Use of a scope can show this. I have a Flintstone era Tektronix ...
Stereo Receivers from the past...
Sansui 5000X, Harman Kardon 330, Marantz 2230 or 2270 (if you can afford it).  Pioneers are problematic with the protective relay cutting in and out due to undersized power supplies and marginal parts. Not a big fan of Yamaha either.
Help- audiophile husband just dies
Call Brian at Hideaway Music in the Chestnut Hill area of Philadelphia.  He deals in used hi fi equipment and will bevery fair.
What Would You Do with a Sealed, 1st Press Miles Davis "Kind of Blue"?
Columbia CL1355 "Kind of Blue" Miles Davis: What you have is a Columbia "Record Club" version of this famous record.  The record is the same as the standard version but was in a sealed plastic inner sleeve with a tear edge instead of the standard ...
Top vintage receivers vs. modern high-end equipment
Sansui 5000X (circa 1969-70) and Marantz 2270 (circa 1970) are two of my vintage favorites.  Don't get the Sansui 5000 or 5000a just the 5000X.  These models had a lot of problems and recalls.  Most of the early Marantz are good but not the B seri...
Vacuum tubes: Radio tubes, TV tubes, Audio tubes
A tube is a tube from the simplest diode to the most complex multi element combination tube used in TV's.  Since its first inception in the early 1900's two element diode used to detect radio signals (via Morse code in ships), to the three element...
How much discount typically for a new MC275 to expect from a dealer?
The MC 275 is as nearly bullet proof as you can get.  I would not hesitate buying a clean used one with low hours or trade in from a reputable source or dealer and save some money.  I would try and find a "Gordon Gow" edition since it was of limit...
