Your choice - TT, Arm, Stage, Cartridge - $5000 budget
My London Decca Super Gold does things that I've not heard any other cartridge do. With the optional DeccaPod, it is $1600 new in the US. I would build my analog front end around that particular cartridge; it is that amazing. I'm also highly parti...
LIO versus LFD NCSE with Harbeth Compact 7?
I haven't heard the LFD, but I did hear the LIO at the Vinnie Rossi room at RMAF last fall, driving a pair of Harbeth Super HL-5 Plus speakers. IMO, the pairing was a best-of-show contender. The version of the LIO being used had the giant-tube pre...
Top integrated with MC phono section
If it's as good as the one in my Luxman L-505u, then it's difficult to beat. I wouldn't be surprised if it was better.
Amplification question - PrimaLuna Tubes vs. McIntosh Solid State
Can recommend the PrimaLuna for service life and low maintenance, and for the sound, assuming that resembles the non-HP version I have. Haven't heard the Mac.
Amp choice for Harbeth (SHL5)
I heard the Super HL5+ speakers in the Vinnie Rossi room at RMAF. They resembled my Quad ESLs, and I grasped where reviewer Paul Seydor was coming from when he wrote the same thing. From a 'stat lover, it is the highest praise possible. The setup ...
What are some of the downsides of owning a Magneplanar .7 or 1.7i ?
If you want your music to kick you in the chest (while it damages your hearing) get some Klipschorns. IME, the requirement to be out from the front wall is very true. It is less of a requirement, but still true, for most box speakers. The reason i...
Has anyone considered rebuying a speaker you once owned??
I once owned, and still own a black pair of Quad ESLs (57). Now I also own a bronze pair, in even better shape. So, yes!
What is your speaker ownership history since 1995?
In my main system only...DIY two-waysMagneplanar MMGsMagneplanar 1.7sQuad ESLs (57)For my tastes, I know that I will never do any better, so the Quads will stay until I cannot fix them.
If bi-amping is so great, why do some high end speakers not support it?
Bi-amping is for engineers.Bi-wiring is for the birds.IMO ;)
Anyone try KT150 in Primaluna Dialogue Premium HP
I'm running KT-120s, not 150's. The 120s fit inside the stock tube cage, no problem.I wish folk reporting their sonic observations with these amps would also indicate whether they were running triode, or ultralinear. I run mine in triode, and hear...
Has anyone compared K150 tubes and the stock EL34s in Primaluna integrated/amplifiers?
In my opinion, everyone commenting about sound quality on a dual-mode amp like the PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium should indicate whether their observations apply to ultralinear mode, or triode mode, or both, if that is the case.
Amps from the 1980's -- What gear holds up sonically? Reliably?
I concur that the Hafler (DH-220) holds up sonically, and reliably.A couple years earlier (late 70s), the Tim de Paravicini Luxman tube MB-3045 holds up sonically, but NOT in terms of reliability. His SS preamp, the C-1000, does in both respects.
Help me to choose turntable below 1600$.
The PLX-1000 was reviewed in Stereophile AFTER ADJUSTING ITS LOOSE TONEARM BEARINGS. Mine came with loose tonearm bearings too, and after being advised by the vendor not to attempt adjustment, I sent it back. Too bad, because in other respects, it...
Considering switching from Audio Research to PrimaLuna, troube with VS115 amp
I have had it with sacrificial resistors. I don't even want fuses.Give me a "bad tube" indicator, and nothing to do but replace the tube.
If bi-amping is so great, why do some high end speakers not support it?
"If bi-amping is so great, why do some high end speakers not support it?"Because their designers are not confident in the engineering skills of their customers.
