Low mass 12" tonearms?
The 12" Jelco SA-750L is actually 2.5 grams lighter in effective mass than their shorter arms. The specs are 10.96 g with the standard counterweight, and 10.80 g with the heavier counterweight. This is without a cartridge. They are oil-damped, if ...
What phono pre am I looking for?
I'd bet a quarter that the Black Ice F159 is a further refinement of the circuits used in the Fosgate Signature, which is a very fine sounding phono preamp. It looks like Chinese manufacturing and a plain-Jane case have cut $1000 off the old Signa...
Rega Elicit-R Volumes: Phono vs Line
I don't know about your amp's settings, but it is common for phono to sound quieter. That does seem like a lot of difference in volume knob position though. But maybe it is explainable. For starters the nominal target voltage for phono preamps was...
Highest detail cartridges
One more recommendation for a London Decca. Its unique, no-cantilever design has been astonishing listeners for over 50 years. My Super Gold certainly astonished me. From its reputation, I was kind of expecting exaggerated dynamics and overwhelmin...
Decca London Gold cartridge nightmare
I bought a new London Decca Super Gold, with the DeccaPod mounting block installed, for Christmas in 2016. I've had no problems using either a Marantz TT-15 (Clearaudio) tonearm, or a Jelco SA-750L 12" tonearm. It hummed with a Teac TN-400 Magnefl...
Promitheus Audio Issues
When I ordered my standard TVC, with the +6dB option, Nicolas had to build it instead of shipping from stock. Sometimes it took a second email to get a reply on status. Total time from order to delivery was three months.
Has anyone made the jump to $uper High end and were disappointed?
I agree that there is much more to achieving good SQ than spending more money, on "better" equipment. I just don't think SQ can keep getting better and better, without limit.
Has anyone made the jump to $uper High end and were disappointed?
With respect to FIDELITY, there certainly IS a glass ceiling, and it is the recording. One may be able to improve the sound of a recording, to make it sound better than it really is, but it is logically impossible to be more faithful to a recordin...
Has anyone made the jump to $uper High end and were disappointed?
Is a waist of funds kinda like a money belt?Of course there is a curve of diminishing returns. With respect to high fidelity, it is asymptotic to the recording being played. I learned a long time ago that, for me, sound quality doesn't get better ...
What tonearm will better mine?
I have a 12" Jelco SA-750L, and a London Decca Super Gold, with the DeccaPod, and a Yamamoto "African Black Wood" headshell. It is the most obviously RIGHT combination that I have ever experienced.
Phono cable recommendations - high performance good value cable
Nordost Heimdahl (DIN) or AQ King Cobra (RCA)
Would you use an Ortofon A90 on a Jelco tonearm?
Yes, I would put an A-90 on a Jelco SA-750 tonearm. It IS a top quality tonearm, not to say that better do not exist, but $1K isn't likely to get you one.
Just retired and want to get back to vinyl listening
I think the Luxman you are considering is a "can't go wrong" move. It will provide a baseline for phono, line stage, and power amp that will each be difficult to beat, and it gets you going right out of the box without agonizing over which other c...
Long distance between preamp and power amp
I use 6-meter RCAs (AQ King Cobra) between my preamp in my listening room and my phono preamp in the next room, with no issues.
My jazz collection told me to get a *real* system
If you are interested in performing some lower-cost experiments in the meantime, I would consider trying a Parks Audio Budgie tube phono stage in place of the PP2 ($400), and a pair of Magneplanar MMG speakers ($600). The latter can be auditioned ...
