subwoofer suspended from ceiling?
We've done a number of designs with soffit mounted subs. There are issues, vibration, making a very rigid mount, but if you can over come those it can work well. In most cases the floor is simplier, and it's what most people do, but it doesn't nec...
One or two JL subs?
Two subs allow you to cancel out at least one room mode. Much easier from a placement standpoint. Harmon International has a very good paper on this by Floyd Toole and Todd Welti.
Loudspeakers with a wide sweet spot
Hmmm--I don't agree with the planar suggestion. Planar's can throw of a wide soundstage but the sweet spot is usually very small. In general achieving a wide sweet spot I find comes at the price of imaging and detail. While the Eidolons do have a v...
best WOOFER ???
What is best? The performance of a driver has so much to do with the cabinet and environment. That being said we did a 2 channel design for a client that installed two 18" infinite baffle subs in his room to augment his monitors. Pretty amazing re...
Selling Large Speakers - How to reduce shipping?
Try a common carrier or freight forwarding company. They are designed to ship heavy items like this. I would guess you would be in the $450 range for that kind of size and weight.
Sub users...
Depends on the crossover point. If you are using the sub to just augment the lowest notes (30 hz and below), then one sub in mono can sound very natural. However, if you are crossing over substantially higher--say 60 Hz or above, then 2 subs in st...
Isolation Transformer - Use with Cheater Plug
But NGjockey--you are probably using a balanced center pole grounding scheme I'm guessing--in which case there is no neutral--it really is negative.
external crossover recommendations
The Rives sub-PARC. It was designed just for that and has continuous phase adjustment and parametric EQ for the bass section. It also has an amplifier for the subs.Rives sub-PARC
What to see at CES?
The new Navison 150 OTL monoblock amp (room 30-119). Okay, I'm biased on this one, but it is a stellar amp for under $30k.
D.I.Y. Bass Traps- calling acoustic techs....
To deal with a 50 Hz bump you will need the trap to be VERY large in diameter. This is an absorbing kind of trap and to be effective needs to make it to the 1/4 wavelength, that is roughly 5.5 feet. If you go to our resource page. you will find th...
Subwoofer meshes well with 2-channel?
The key is integration. For 2 channel I do not like using a crossover for the mains, but rather rolling the sub (or subs--which is much better) in at a low frequency (35 to 30 hz). Phase must be right which is easily calculated by the distance of ...
will adding a subwoofer improve overall audio
Even with my large system a sub does improve the overall soundstage--but it has to be integrated very well. Which means no inexpensive subs and crossovers. I'm using the Talon thunderbird and Rives sub-PARC to drive it and crossover. With a very h...
Best possible digital output from a computer?
I've been doing a USB to coax conversion with an ESI U24 soundcard (no longer available, but a very good unit). However, my results are mediocre at best. There are so many issues though from the initial ripping, format, PC, USB to coax, and digita...
Netflix and Tivo to stream internet movies to Tivo
To further update this. I've had a few experiences where "my internet connection has slowed"--at least that's the message I receive while watching. It then changes the resolution to accomodate the slower bandwidth. I've seen three distinct qualiti...
Scoutmaster runs very slow
I had a similar issue, but more like what Tom stated. My speed was all over the map and I figured it was a power delivery issue. I thought the motor was probably going bad. So I opened up the unit to find there was Hurst motor. Checked it out onli...
