What Matters and What is Nonsense
“interestingly when I was growing up in the UK in the 80s it was the opposite to the way you describe it. The hifi mags (apparently egged on by the then-almighty Linn) were suggesting it was wise to spend half on the source.“This was reasonable ad...

Preamp is likely the weak link in most higher end systemsThis is why I got rid of my preamp, which is possible If you don’t need phono.. DAC -> AMP. My presmp is a straight wire with no gain.
Using a 100 Volt amp on our 120 volt power line ?
Think of it this way: would you be comfortable running a USA amp at 144 volts? If it’s possible to modify, the power supply, that would work as well as a step down device.

Bad idea. You would definitely need a step down transformer. Running it at 120 volts could be seriously shortening component life.
Classical composers, symphonies
If we are including Hindemith, we should mention his most popular work: Mathis der Maler. And since you like Mahler, you should definitely check out Shostakovich and Britten.

I don’t know for certain, but I’m betting that these recordings when downloaded in DSD format are not compressed:https://bluecoastmusic.com/store?f%5B0%5D=field_record_label%3A139(I have the Mahler 2nd recording and it has a dynamic range approach...
How To Field Questions About Your Audiophile Lifestyle...
Q."Why do you play "Aerosmith" and the "Butthole Surfers"then switch to that "Beethoven" crap?"A. "Beethoven was a musician too."He went deaf without any rock music at all.”Classic! :-)
Cleaner music when laptop is on battery vs plugged in
Make sure your USB cable from the PC to the DAC has a ferrite core at the PC end, and even better, both ends.
Beware the audio guru
I think the Yanni/Laurel thing, as silly as it may have been, taught us that many of us hear differently from others.I don’t think that is true. I experimented with different speakers and headphones and am now certain that the biggest factor in he...

Phonostages with Adjustable Curves, the Concise List
Hadley 621: curves for RIAA, LP (“Old Columbia”), and 78. Also Marantz 7C and 7T.
Infinity RS 2.5
I’m glad to hear this news. Your explanation now makes perfect sense. The only way the the rear tweeters could play but not the front, was burned out tweeters. Fuses are much cheaper. Enjoy! You have some good speakers.
Should I eliminate my preamp?
Yes, but the OP asked about using a DAC with volume control as a low impedance source to drive the interconnect to the amplifier. There is no passive attenuator in this scenario, and from an engineering standpoint no need for the preamp. The peopl...
Should I eliminate my preamp?
The OP was asking about getting rid of the preamp in the case when the DAC has a volume control. In that case, there is no downstream volume control, and no need to provide a low impedance buffer for the interconnect, as the amplifier will take ca...
Should I eliminate my preamp?
The theory is correct. Any preamp will add frequency response anomalies and distortion. You may prefer that sound to the unmodified signal, but it is good to be honest (as most of the posters in this thread have been) about what is actually going ...
