ProAc sound with SS vs tubes
There are a few things at play here. Proacs like tubes. I believe a solid state amplifier would tighten up the bass, but you might lose some of the magic in the mids, and overall, get a less "relaxed" sound. A more powerful tube amp (50~60 watts/c...
Triode Wire Labs
Yes, I run their twelve plus power cable on my phono preamp, and their ten plus cable on my tube amp. The build quality of the cables is excellent, and I believe they are fairly priced and represent good value for the money. Their twelve plus cabl...

I must chime in here, since I just decided to let my subscription to TAS lapse. Been subscribing to Stereophile since sometime in the '90s, and TAS for a good while (over 5 years). TAS writers are full of themselves. Especially certain ones - I wo...
why do people feel the need to buy expensive cable
Thank you Zd. You have just proven that there is a higher correlation between cost and degree of difficulty to manufacture, than there is between cost and sound quality.

Jazzgene - after experimenting with a few more power cords on my VS60, I agree with you that the VS60 is sensitive to the power cord. I guess the particular ones that I was swapping in and out back then just so happened to all be sonically similar.
Counterfeit Audioquest Cables
I think this is a great thread. First let me say that I don't own any AudioQuest (AQ) cables. Let me try to address your points. With regard to AQ benefitting from the existence of bogus copycat lookalikes: I would agree with that as imitation is ...

Greatest song titles..
"Miles Davis - Bill Evans Reunion In The Sky" by Ron DiSalvio. What a song title, what a thought.
Herbie Hancock best recordings
Intimate live setting - no, studio - yes, incredibly well done - yes, wide soundstage - yes: HH's The New Standard. So it meets two of the original poster's four criteria. I love this one, it's as fresh as anything HH has done.
music with clear placement of the instruments.
My answer to Viridian's question: No. I hear all the instruments overlapping to form a cohesive whole.
