Shahinian Obelisk vs VandersteenTreo
Vandersteen ships their speakers standing upright in the box secured to a pallet. The problem is, when a speaker is shipped this way and I suspect most speaker companies ship this way, it will put a driver in the speaker at risk of having its voic...
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
Compression drivers of all types, from what I remember, had a phase plug. The Tangerine came later, (mid 70's) first used in the Altec Model 19. The phase plug was needed to make the compression driver work properly. I don't know the mechanical or...
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
I believe any and all Altec compression drivers had phase plugs. They changed some of their characteristics  (Tangerine) to extend and smooth out high frequencies.Cheers, Tim
Horn based loudspeakers why the controversy?
I had a pair of home version Altec A-7's (846B Valencia) back in the early 70's. They were dynamic, had gobs of mid-bass. Problem was, their response curves were very ragged, and the high frequencies fell off quite rapidly above 12k. They also had...
'Quietest place on Earth' anechoic chamber
I once went into an anechoic chamber designed to test people with hearing aids. It was very un-nerving. I couldn't stand it.
What makes tape sound better than vinyl ?
+1 atmasphere.A good example is the Sheffield Labs D2D of Dave Grusin "Discovered Again." Listen to the D2D recording, and then listen the Seffield Labs "Treasury" recording of that same album. The Treasury version is from the backup tape recordin...
Ayre QB9 or Schiit Gungir Multibit

Compliance question Cartridge vs Tonearm
It should work fine. I used a Soundsmith Boheme, (one step down from Aida, same ruby stylus) with a Rega arm. Cartridge was a high comp.
Is there a big difference in digital streaming devices?
I've been using a Bluesound Node 2. It has an excellent internal DAC and streams very good SQ. I recently added an Ayre Codex dac, and got a dramatic improvement in sound especially when using the Codex balanced outputs.
Is using streaming services worthy of an audiophile?
Geoffkait,You obviously took my words and twisted them completely. I have come across people who say they cannot listen to digital, at all. Analog is the only thing they listen to. What a shame. Lots of music they are denying themselves of. No, I ...
My speaker quest
+1 hifiman5roberjerman. Your opinion taken with a VERY large grain of salt.....
Legacy Studio HD
I've owned Legacy in the past. But not the Studio's. I have listened to them and think they are excellent small monitors. They could reproduce a low "E" bass guitar note (41.5 hz) with stunning realism. If I were looking for a small monitor speake...
NEW!!! Wilson Alexia MkII listening session
I like B&W too. I used to own the 802D. Lovely speaker. Although with a lot of people, it could be infamous rather than famous. But I won't get into that as a lot of words have been said about them in these threads. Mr. Kramer liked the speake...
Ayre Codex - to keep or not to keep
Mine, so far, is running like a champ. No issues so far. Just great sound. Especially in balanced mode.

+1, randyhatI too, have heard excellent examples  of both formats. Anyone that says that one format can always outdo the other is only fooling themselves. It's all about recording quality.
