What does the term "Speed" mean in a speaker?
Speed = Rise and DecayI enjoy a fast midrange/woofer/subwoofer and cabinet design, as it sounds crisp and accurate. Tweeters are generally fast. I enjoyed the Focal Tc120/90 series tdxt with the vented pole piece, as you could build a rear enclosu...
Why does my old CD player sound so much better than my new streamer?
Meridian 508.24 (upgrade) sounds better than my neighbor’s streaming $8000 system—we A-Bed it and now he doesn’t want to talk to me anymore. We were going to compare again and bring some more of my CDPs, but he shut me down after the first compari...
Popular new/used SS stereo power amps under $2500?
Plinius SA-250/SA-100 are great amps and you can enjoy them for a while, then have the upgraded to current specs by the former USA importer, and get a giant killer sound out of them. Stock they sound awesome with great midrange and fantastic bass.
What is the best solid state amplifier you have ever heard?
@lpretiring The original technician(s) is still at Brooks Berdan, and they service all generations of BEL 1001 amplifiers, and just about any other brand of audio equipment:https://brooksberdanltd.com/audio-services/audio-equipment-repair-los-ange...
What is the best solid state amplifier you have ever heard?
I’m listening to both the BEL 1001 MK V and the Plinius SA-100 (updated in 2015 to current specs and worn replaced parts). They are both so musically satisfying and 3D resolving. I’ve had mega-amps in my system and the two shine with Quads and WIL...
BEL 1001 service in 2013?
Brook Berdan still services BEL and other SS and Tube Audio amplifiers and does a great job at a fair price.
A little History lesson on, "High- End" cables:
Like them or don’t, Cables are a lot of the reason why I enjoy hi-end, as it is fun to listen to the different sound signatures of each individual cable. If if you cannot hear the difference(s) then it is most like not fun to try new cables and ca...
My Cary amp - the story of a hum and a bug
I had a poor experience with Cary Audio in the late 90s and no longer use their products. We purchased their popular 300B monoblocks and accompanying preamplifier for trade show use (CES and Stereophile shows) and worked quite well with our speake...
How far have ss amps really come in the last twenty years?
Better yet, if I had a lot of equipment and opinions, I’d love to have others come to my home and listen to the four different solid state amplifiers in my system, and tell me that they all sound the same—BEL 1001 mkV, Plinius SA-100 mkII upgraded...

Bruce Moore Tube Amps
Yes, I purchased a Companion II that was upgraded (Cardas wiring and Cardas female RCAs, Infini-Caps, Goldpoint Volume Pods, Detachable Power Cord socket, pair of JAN Philips 6922, etc), and checked out by Bob Bergner. The Bruce Moore Amps and Pre...

Meridian 508.24...sound compared to newer players
Thanks for you both sharing your upgrade path from the Meridian 508. I tried a few $2k players from the local hifi shop and none of them sounded overall better than my 508 :)
