I had a Sumiko blue point evo3 just switched to an Ortofon quintet blue.I was trying to stay under $500 (new or used)but no sure if I’d hear any improvements at that level.

Wow surprised no one mentioned Jim Gordon who played with Clspton, Derek and the Dominoes, George Harrison, Bonnie and Delaney  and many others. He was on everyones A list till he landed in jail. As Mr Baker said most drummers just can't swing.

I second the 1.7i, paired with a good sub you will have great sound. You should be able to find a nice used pair in the $1300 to $1600 range. 
Dude, where's my bass? Oh, lost to stiffened rubber surrounds...who knew?
I've had several friends get speaker surrounds fixed they will sound good as new once broken in.It maybe a good time to check crossover components too .

Having owned both 1.7 i and now 3.7i I completely agree with don_c55. my room is 12 x 15 and the 3.7i speakers sound fab. Definitely more weight and sound pressure too.
