Two things improved the overall sound quality dramatically. I re-terminated the speaker cables, replacing the spades with the locking banana plugs. (if your amp has some fancy binding posts with a large contact area for the spade you don't to need...

Its role is to transfer "digital data", i.e., 0(zero)s and 1s, not "audio signal". As long as your $10 USB cable is structurally solid, it should work as good as the $500 one.
