Berkeley vs Bryston vs Lampizator
I owned the Berkeley Alpha 2 for two years, fed by their Alpha USB.  I next changed to the Lampizator Big 7, also fed by the Alpha USB.  There was no contest in my system:  the Lampi had much more resolution, which is interesting, but most importa...
What are you listening to right now?
Frank Zappa "Hot Rats", in homage to my late brother in law Dave.
interconnects vs speaker cables vs power cords - which make the biggest difference?
Yes, it much depends upon the particular system, but in my system(s) I have consistently heard what several others have:1)  Power Cords + conditioners make the greatest difference.2)  Speaker Cables next (by a fair bit).3)  Interconnects last (but...
Speaker cable recommendation for Marten Django XL
I have never owned Marten's, so filter my comments as you wish, but I have heard them at audio shows several times.  I like their speed and their articulate sound, but I do note that they tend to offer no warmth, in and of themselves.  I run some ...
RCA or XLR iInput Shorting Plugs or Pins
I've applied shorting plugs to my VAC Ren Sig II's unused inputs, and I sure believe it made it quieter.  Spent all of a $1 a piece off of Ebay, just as bdp24 notes above, so I haven't sweated it much to make dead sure of it...
________ is an artist I did not expect to like but was pleasantly surprised.
Dr. Dre "The Chronic".
ayre mx-r vs ayre vx-5 twenty
Thank you for your in-depth comments, Joe.  Well stated and insightful.  (I bet they help the original poster, too!)
ayre mx-r vs ayre vx-5 twenty
Hi Joe,I bet the MXR-20's sound great!  How do they compare to your PS Audio BHK 300's?
Devore O/96 with Class A Solid State Amps
Brownsfan:  " I'm just starting to delve into the world of room treatments, and I am going to be taking my time on this project and getting the room right.  This stuff isn't exactly cheap."If you are willing and capable of the DIY track, you can ...
Anyone with experience with the effectiveness of the AVA HUMDINGER?
I tried one on their 30 day home trial basis, but it didn't completely remove the transformer hum I was getting with some monoblock amps, so I returned it.  Since it is a money back proposition, you only risk shipping costs to try it.FYI, DC defin...
Honing down the speaker shortlist ~$5K
I will second the mention of Vandersteen Quatro's.  I owned them for 5 years, running them in my 11.25' x 15' x 8' room, and when I spent the time to dial them in using their powered subwoofer 11 band equalizer (huge advantage IME), they worked ex...
Which system would you rather have?
Every guy I know with extensive army history has significant hearing losses due to all of the "Boom!" that comes along with the job.  Live concerts and a mediocre stereo system may indeed be indistinguishable in that case...
Neil Young LP box vol. 5-8 soon available on individual LP
I have the first box set and it surpasses my original issues.  And I actually have a soft spot for "Time Fades Away" - - must just have been that time of life when it came out, I guess...
Can a buyer back out with no penalty?
Two times over the years I've done this for a local audio nut, and both times it turned into clear "tire kicking", treating my house like it is an audio salon.  I will only do cash pick up for convenience, but not offer an audition.  Whether it is...
Audio Note DAC 5 Special / Signature v the rest of high end?
I built the Audio Note Kit 4.1 LE and subbed in some VH Audio CuTf caps on the output, plus rolled all of the tubes a fair bit.  It is a great DAC for the money IME, and it easily displaced my EAR Acute with greater body and "feel" of all instrume...
