Are both speakers exactly the same distance from you?
2A3 vs. 300B single end triode....
I prefer the 2A3 overall for classical such as string quartets, small scale orchestral and jazz; music that rarely utilize instruments where low frequency extension is required. While the 300B gives a better lower frequency extension and twice the...
Blowing Fuses in a Tube Amp
You also could have an output tube with an internal short. If you have a tube tester, you can find out right away, or you can simply replace the tube.Or, you may have the wrong fuse type. If your amp requires a time delay (slow blow) fuse and you ...
From tubes to solid state. What do you loose...
I don't think you lose anything...there are plenty of SS amps out there that will give you "transparency, timbral acuracy, micro dynamics and soundstage".
Do you leave your SS amp on all the time?
Leaving the amps on generally makes 'em sound better, but some do stabilize after an hour or so to the point where leaving them on longer makes no difference. Depends what you have; my Levinson mono's sound their best after 24 hours, my ARC peaked...
would this Deter you from buying used gear????
Good Lord, everybody... just engrave the serial number above the metal tag with the factory s/n, or on the bottom chassis if you're concerned about theft. This is proof of ownership without having to put your name, rank, SSN, D/L#, blood type, wha...
Preamps for dummies that would be me
The function of a preamp is to increase the gain of the source component in order for the power amplifier to gain it up to a level where it can drive the speakers. Preamps were once absolutely necessary when the source was LP's. It was, and still ...
Phase and time alligned speakers
Your first paragraph is like an abstract for an MIT white paper. Check out MIT's web site under "technology".
Tu-bee or not tu-bee... A philosophical question.
It should not be surprising if some of the VT-231 variants sound the same as its 6SN7 proper in a vibration-free environment. The difference is that the VT-231 is a military spec version, designed to minimize microphonics in high vibration setting...
isolating a tube problem - ARC LS5 preamp
Well, the ARC LS5 could be what, 10 years old or more? Maybe it's more than one tube that's bad. I would replace them all - and I would have done so at the time of purchase. Those tubes are everything - makes no sense to skimp. Might be time to in...
Adjusting Mode Buttons of Audio Alchemy DTI Pro32
If I remember correctly, to set the dither you have to press and hold the "input" button with one hand and press the dither select with the other. Or maybe it's press and hold both the "input" and "phase" while selecting dither.Sorry, I am strictl...
popping sound
Give Krell tech support a call. Could be a problem with the muting (soft-start) circuitry.
NOS Tubes--Are they worth it? or accurate?
No one said adopting tube amps is easy. Finding tubes that work well is a demanding undertaking, especially with the NOS's. Some that you find are gems, some are dogs, some work well with this but terrible with that, some die quick and painless, o...
May use a step down transformer for HI-End ?
Most U.S. electronics are UL listed for 120 volts from 50 to 60 hz. UL listings for computers, electronics, hair dryers, etc., take into account travel to 50 hz countries and, accordingly, manufacturers design power supplies to accomadate frequenc...
Urgent help: fuse breaker box for dedicated line?
Something sounds wrong here, DT. The "contractor" will do the wiring if you provide the panel? Politely decline - this guy might not be an electrician. Electricians will know exactly what to buy for your requirements and how to legally install. Ca...
