Kef Kube equalizer
I have a pair of KEF 104.2s, four 102.2s, and four 102s. I don't use my KUBEs with any of them. Instead, I use two Velodyne HGS-15s with the 104.2s and 102s (2.1 & 5.1) and an HGS-10 with the stacked 102.2s (2.1). Cross over to the sub at 80 H...
Hearing loss Temporary or more permanent?
One caveat when using the OSHA guidelines is the lobbying that goes into setting them. It costs money to make the workplace quieter. I'd be inclined to use a few dB under the guidelines or to shorten my exposure time. I attended a gathering of aud...
Hearing loss Temporary or more permanent?
When I was a grad student decades ago, I worked at a research center aimed at the study of noise-induced hearing loss. Temporary threshold shift (TTS) was a hot topic. Rock concerts were in vogue, and lots of folks were concerned about whether the...
Soundstage, Imaging, Detail & Presence??
Sebrof, in rereading my previous post I realize my verbiage was a bit confusing. What I had intended to convey is that there seems to be two camps. What I might call the the analog camp favors tubes and vinyl; the digital camp, along with those wh...
VTI audio rack, any good?
You just unscrew the top of each leg, pour in sand or shot, and screw the top back on. Simple as that. In my 6/10/10 post, I should have mentioned that the custom made spikes cost more than the rack. I recently added Sorbothane pads under the feet...
Soundstage, Imaging, Detail & Presence??
I suspect the speakers and acoustic environment of the room have far more to do with presence than tubes v. solid state. I've often wondered how fundamentalism survives scientific explanation, but the controversy over analog v. digital whether it ...
Sony SCD-XA5400ES-Best SACD for under $10,000
Mrtennis,While I think your series of posts in this thread have been mostly mental masterbation, and thus unworthy of reply, one comment in your 3/18 post left what I think is a misimpression. My impression is the number who extol the virtues of t...
Separates or Receiver to modernize home theater?
Jon,Given you have the amps, I'd look for a used processor with HDMI. I think HDMI is required for DSD and lossless Bly-ray audio. I moved my Proceed PAV/PDSD to a second system and installed a used Cary Cinema 11a in my main system to get HDMI.db
Background video - listen/watch different sources
Silly me, Noble100. I moved my Proceed PAV/PDSD to a second system and installed a (used) Cary Cinema 11a in my main system for HDMI and with it the ability to process lossless codecs from my PS3 and 2.1 and 5.1 DSD from my XA5400ES.Of course the ...
Sony 5400 question
It will be interesting to compare the XA5400ES with the Benchmark, because the Sony unaided by a separate DAC seems excellent with redbook.db
Class A multichannel amplifier?
In rereading this thread, I don't understand the rationale for Colbalturbo's contention in the 1/31 post that "with a projector you will need a retractible screen for 2 channel." Colbalturbo, do you believe good 2 channel sound can only be achieve...
Background video - listen/watch different sources
I think a neat solution might be to introduce a DVDO Edge into your system. Take the HDMI out for your TV source to the Edge, where you split off video and send that via HDMI directly to your display; the audio goes via HDMI to your processor. By ...
Sony SCD-XA5400ES-Best SACD for under $10,000
I think the most common suggestion is upgrading the power cord. I have been a skeptic of this as an upgrade, but I added a cord recommended by my audiophile friends, a cord that looks more like a garden hose than a power cord. It may have made a d...
New Oppo BDP-95 better than the McIntosh MVP-881?
Ah, but the Seiko and Casio watches are not as indestructible as a Rolex. When I was younger, I'd go through a Timex in weeks, but the Rolex graduation gift lasted for three decades, before being lost when sent to Switzerland for repair. With the ...
Sony 5400 Best Connection
If you want DSD or DSD 5.1, I think you need to use HDMI. I've tried both HDMI and XLR, and decided on HDMI. I really enjoy the DSD 5.1 available with many of my newer SACDs, where surround is used to enhance the sense of hall ambience.
